Many people say that we have developed into a “throw-away” culture because we are filling up our environment with so many plastic bags and rubbish that we cannot fully dispose of. To what extent do you agree with this opinion and what measures can you recommend reducing this problem?
Sample Response
Nowadays people produce more waste than ever, as they are accustomed to a “throw-away” lifestyle. And it’s become worst as they generate wastes which are difficult to be disposed of. I personally agree with the statement and the following essay will explain it in details.
To begin with, as the world economic has developed, people generate more waste each year. With the mass industrialisation, costs of producing products such as the plastic bottle or disposable diapers are getting lower than ever. As a result, lots of people prefer to use these kinds of products, as they believe that these items are more efficient and hygiene. However, they do not realise that these products have a catastrophic effect on the environment. It is very difficult to recycle these items, as it requires for more than a century to dispose of them. Consequently, people require more landfills these days which will reduce the number of green areas.
However, to resolve the issue, we could change the habits of purchasing non-environmentally friendly products. For example, instead of buying mineral water that is packed in the plastic bottle, we could use a glass bottle that can be repeatedly used. In terms of recycling, the glass bottle is easier than the plastic one and safer for the human’s health as well. It has been reported that plastic bottles could cause cancers and other kinds of serious diseases. Another example would be to use a paper bag or a permanent bag as a substitution of plastic bags. By changing these kinds of lifestyle, it is hoped that we could reduce the number of non-disposable waste in the area.
In conclusion, it is undeniable that people generate more waste these days, as they have a “throw-away” habit. And it gets worst, as many of the waste are non-disposable. I strongly agree with the statement, and we should change this negative lifestyle immediately. We could start by changing our lifestyle from using disposable items to consuming a friendly environment one, and hoped that the number of waste would be reduced gradually.
IELTS Writing Correction
- 1. Correct comparative form Original: it’s become worst Suggested revision: it has become worse Why it matters: “Worse” is the required comparative form, while “worst” is superlative.
- 2. Use uncountable noun Original: wastes Suggested revision: waste Why it matters: “Waste” is uncountable when referring generally to discarded material.
- 3. Correct infinitive pattern Original: difficult to be disposed of Suggested revision: difficult to dispose of Why it matters: After “difficult,” the active infinitive is the natural construction here.
- 4. Use fixed expression Original: details Suggested revision: detail Why it matters: The fixed expression is “in detail,” with a singular noun.
- 5. Use the correct noun Original: economic Suggested revision: economy Why it matters: “Economy” is the noun needed as the subject of “has developed.”
- 6. Remove unnecessary article Original: With the mass industrialisation Suggested revision: With mass industrialisation Why it matters: The abstract noun “industrialisation” does not take “the” in this general reference.
- 7. Use generic plural Original: products such as the plastic bottle Suggested revision: products such as plastic bottles Why it matters: A plural noun without an article is appropriate for a general product category.
- 8. Use adjective form Original: hygiene Suggested revision: hygienic Why it matters: An adjective is required to coordinate with “efficient.”
- 9. Add clause comma Original: these days which will Suggested revision: these days, which will Why it matters: A comma must introduce this non-defining relative clause.
- 10. Improve expression Original: change the habits of purchasing Suggested revision: change our habit of purchasing Why it matters: The revised possessive and singular noun create a natural expression of the intended action.
- 11. Improve packaging phrase Original: packed in the plastic bottle Suggested revision: packaged in a plastic bottle Why it matters: “Packaged in” is the natural collocation, and the bottle needs an indefinite article.
- 12. Complete the comparison Original: the glass bottle is easier than the plastic one Suggested revision: a glass bottle is easier to recycle than a plastic one Why it matters: The comparison must state what the glass bottle is easier to do.

Why this response received Band 6.5
The response maintains a clear position and organizes its explanation and proposed consumer actions into a logical progression, supported by relevant examples. Its main limitation is persistent imprecision in word choice and grammar, which makes several claims awkward despite the generally clear meaning, while the recommended measures remain somewhat narrow. The highest priority is to express each solution in accurate, natural sentences and explain its likely environmental effect more fully.
IELTS Writing Criteria Scores
Task Response
The response clearly agrees with the proposition, explains the waste problem, and recommends relevant actions, though the solution set is mostly limited to individual purchasing habits.
Develop a broader range of measures and explain more precisely how each would reduce hard-to-dispose-of waste.
Coherence and Cohesion
The four-paragraph structure and overall progression are clear, but some linking is mechanical and several sentences repeat rather than advance the point.
Use transitions that reflect the exact logical relationship and remove repeated statements from the introduction and conclusion.
Lexical Resource
There is sufficient range to discuss industrialisation, recycling, and environmental harm, but frequent collocation and word-form errors reduce precision.
Prioritize accurate forms and natural combinations such as economic development, hygienic products, environmentally friendly choices, and non-recyclable waste.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy
The response uses both simple and complex structures, but recurring errors with articles, agreement, comparison forms, and passive constructions remain noticeable.
Edit each sentence for subject-verb agreement, article use, countable nouns, and complete, naturally formed clauses.
