Some people believe that nowadays we have too many choices. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Sample Response
There has been considerable debate regarding the plethora of choices available in modern society. Some believe that we are inundated with an overwhelming number of options, and I fully agree with this perspective. In this essay, I will discuss my reasons for this viewpoint.
One of the primary reasons I believe that there are too many choices today is the vast range of options available in the realm of digital media and entertainment. With the advent of streaming platforms like Netflix, YouTube, and Spotify, consumers are presented with an almost limitless selection of movies, TV shows, music, and podcasts. For instance, Netflix alone has thousands of titles spanning multiple genres and languages, making it difficult for viewers to settle on a single film or series. Even after deciding on a genre, the decision-making process continues, as individuals must still choose between hundreds of highly rated options. This variety, while seemingly convenient, can often lead to decision fatigue, as individuals become overwhelmed by the sheer abundance of choices.
In addition to digital media, the food industry also highlights how the availability of choices has skyrocketed. In the past, people would typically consume local dishes and ingredients based on regional traditions. However, today’s globalization and international trade have made it possible to find food from every corner of the globe in our local supermarkets and restaurants. For example, in any major city, it is now common to find a selection of international cuisines such as Chinese, Mexican, Thai, and Mediterranean. While this cultural diversity enriches our dining experiences, it also means that consumers must face the challenge of choosing from an ever-expanding array of food options, which can sometimes complicate meal planning or dining decisions.
Historically, the majority of choices people had were limited by geography, resources, and available technology. Today, however, the speed at which information is shared and goods are transported has created an environment where the number of choices in almost every aspect of life has increased exponentially. Whether it is shopping for a new car, selecting a vacation destination, or even choosing a career path, individuals are now faced with an almost infinite number of options.
In conclusion, the explosion of choice in today’s world, particularly in the areas of entertainment and food, strongly supports the idea that we are living in a time where options are plentiful.
IELTS Writing Correction
- 1. Use a natural preposition Original: regarding Suggested revision: about Why it matters: “Debate about” is the more direct collocation in this context.
- 2. Use neutral opening language Original: plethora Suggested revision: range Why it matters: “Range” introduces the topic without implying excess before the position is stated.
- 3. Avoid redundant intensity Original: inundated Suggested revision: faced Why it matters: “Inundated” and “overwhelming” express similar intensity, so the revised phrase is tighter.
- 4. Use concise wording Original: in the realm of digital media and entertainment Suggested revision: in digital media and entertainment Why it matters: Removing the abstract phrase “the realm of” makes the point more direct.
- 5. Use formal exemplification Original: streaming platforms like Suggested revision: streaming platforms such as Why it matters: “Such as” introduces the named examples more formally and precisely.
- 6. Link back more clearly Original: the decision-making process continues Suggested revision: the choice remains difficult Why it matters: This wording connects the sentence more explicitly to the difficulty established in the preceding example.
- 7. Use a precise subject Original: availability Suggested revision: number Why it matters: The quantity of choices, rather than their availability, is what the paragraph says has increased.
- 8. Tighten the expression Original: find food from every corner of the globe in our local supermarkets and restaurants Suggested revision: find food from around the world in local supermarkets and restaurants Why it matters: The revision removes unnecessary figurative and first-person wording while preserving the claim.
- 9. Fix the subject structure Original: the majority of choices people had were limited Suggested revision: the range of choices available to people was limited Why it matters: A range can be limited, whereas “the majority of choices” does not express the intended restriction clearly.
- 10. Use when for time Original: where Suggested revision: when Why it matters: Use “when,” rather than “where,” to introduce a clause referring to a period of time.

Why this response received Band 8.0
The response is fluent and logically organised, with well-developed examples from media and food that make the argument easy to follow. Its main limitation is that it proves choices are abundant more convincingly than it proves they are excessive, especially in the broad third paragraph and conclusion; the highest-priority improvement is to connect each example to concrete harms such as decision fatigue or reduced satisfaction.
IELTS Writing Criteria Scores
Task Response
The response presents a clear position and develops relevant examples, but parts of the argument establish the quantity of choices without fully showing why that quantity is too great.
Explain the negative consequences of excessive choice consistently and restate that evaluative point clearly in the conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion
The essay is logically sequenced, clearly paragraphed, and cohesively linked, with each main section serving a distinct role.
Integrate the broad historical paragraph more tightly with the preceding examples so it advances rather than restates the central argument.
Lexical Resource
A broad and precise vocabulary supports fluent discussion, including effective language for abundance, globalisation, and decision-making.
Temper exaggerated expressions such as almost infinite when a more exact formulation would strengthen the academic tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy
Complex and simple structures are varied confidently and remain highly accurate throughout the response.
Streamline a few long sentences containing several clauses to sharpen emphasis while preserving the strong grammatical control.
