How Your Score is Calculated
IELTS Writing is graded using a specific two-stage calculation. Each essay is evaluated on four criteria, and Task 2 is weighted twice as heavily as Task 1.
Task 1 Score
T1 = (TA + CC + LR + GRA) / 4
Task 1 (Report/Letter) contributes 1/3 of the overall score.
Task 2 Score
T2 = (TR + CC + LR + GRA) / 4
Task 2 (Essay) contributes 2/3 of the overall score.
Writing Band Score
Writing = (T1 + T2 × 2) / 3
Final writing scores are rounded to the nearest half-band. Scores ending in .25 round up to .50, and scores ending in .75 round up to the next whole band.
