The picture below shows the difference in the layout of the conference centre in 2010 and 2025.
Sample Response
The maps describe the changes occurring to a center between 2010 and 2025.
It is apparent that the center will experience relatively comprehensive modernization with the modification of some old places and the construction of multiple new rooms. However, there are a number of areas that are going to remain unchanged.
In 2010, the center had a simple design with seven areas, including two rooms, a reception area, a hall, a car park and two gardens. The rooms, located in the top left-hand corner of the center, were immediately next to the hall and the reception. The reception was directly connected to one of the gardens, while the other garden was to the east of the L-shaped car park.
In 2025, the rooms in the northwestern corner will undergo no change, but the hall and the reception will be enlarged due to the relocation of the car park and the demolition of the eastern garden. As a result, a new residence hall with a capacity of 20 rooms will also be erected, standing next to the old hall. The car park will be moved south-eastwards and shrink, while the old garden right beside it will grow in width. To the front of this garden, a variety of new facilities will be built, namely an IT center, a canteen and kitchen, two meeting rooms, a game room and a music room.
IELTS Writing Correction
- 1. Name the site precisely Original: a center Suggested revision: a conference centre Why it matters: The fuller term identifies the mapped site more precisely and matches the task wording.
- 2. Use precise map wording Original: modification of some old places Suggested revision: alteration of existing spaces Why it matters: The revised phrase is more precise and formal for describing a layout.
- 3. Include all facility types Original: multiple new rooms Suggested revision: several new facilities Why it matters: The additions include service areas as well as rooms.
- 4. Specify unchanged features Original: a number of areas Suggested revision: the two rooms Why it matters: The two rooms in the northwest are the clearly unchanged features shown in both plans.
- 5. Describe adjacency accurately Original: directly connected to Suggested revision: adjacent to Why it matters: The 2010 plan shows the reception beside the central garden, without indicating a direct connection.
- 6. Avoid unsupported causation Original: due to the relocation of the car park and the demolition of the eastern garden Suggested revision: while the car park will be relocated and the eastern garden removed Why it matters: The plans show these simultaneous changes but do not establish a causal relationship.
- 7. Use additive link Original: As a result Suggested revision: In addition Why it matters: The residence hall is another planned change, not a stated consequence of the preceding alterations.
- 8. Correct car park change Original: moved south-eastwards and shrink Suggested revision: moved eastwards and enlarged Why it matters: The 2025 plan shows a larger car park along the eastern side of the site.
- 9. Use map direction Original: To the front of this garden Suggested revision: Along the southern edge of the garden Why it matters: A compass-based location is clearer and is supported by the plan's layout.
- 10. Separate two facilities Original: a canteen and kitchen Suggested revision: a canteen, a kitchen Why it matters: The 2025 plan labels the canteen and kitchen as separate facilities.

Why this response received Band 7.5
The response is well organised and gives a comprehensive, mostly accurate account of both layouts, supported by clear spatial detail and a strong range of language. Its main limitation is occasional imprecision in describing relationships and changes, particularly the causal link between relocated features and the exact position of the new facilities. Refine those spatial descriptions and foreground the most substantial transformations more explicitly.
IELTS Writing Criteria Scores
Task Achievement
The overview and detailed comparison cover nearly all major retained, enlarged, relocated, and newly added features with only minor imprecision.
State the central transformation more explicitly and describe the replacement of the eastern garden and car-park area with exact spatial relationships.
Coherence and Cohesion
The four-paragraph structure is logical, and information moves smoothly from the overview to each plan with effective referencing.
Tighten the final detail paragraph by grouping enlarged existing spaces separately from relocated and newly constructed facilities.
Lexical Resource
A wide range of precise map vocabulary is used flexibly, although phrases such as 'old places', 'grow in width', and 'to the front' are less exact.
Choose consistently precise spatial expressions such as 'existing areas', 'widened', and 'along the southern edge'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy
A wide variety of complex structures is handled accurately, with only rare awkwardness and no loss of clarity.
Refine modifier attachment in long sentences so phrases such as 'standing next to the old hall' have an unmistakable referent.
