Table for an IELTS Academic Task 1 question about Downtown Restaurant Weekly Sales.

Sample Response

The table shows the sales volume of breakfast, lunch and dinner in a restaurant for seven days, from November 10 to 16 to be more specific. A glance at the data shows that dinner sales amount was higher than that of breakfast and lunch on an average and sales on weekends were comparatively lower. According to the table data, the restaurant sold eleven hundred dollar’s breakfast on Friday. On that day the lunch and dinner sales of the restaurant were $2400 and more than $3600 respectively. On the whole day, the restaurant’s sale accounted for approximately 7 thousand dollars. The next day the sales amount remained almost the same with over 3800 dollar’s dinner sales. The highest amount of breakfast sales in the week was on Thursday and the restaurant sold over 1450 dollar’s breakfast which is almost double than the breakfast sales amount on Sunday. The highest lunch sale was on Wednesday (roughly2600 dollar) and that was more almost double than the sales on Sunday. It is obvious that the sales amount of the restaurant fell on weekends, less than 5 thousand dollars sale on Sunday compared to over eight thousand dollars sales on Friday. Dinner sales in most of the days were higher than the combined breakfast and lunch sales and dinner sales got a hike on Friday with the record 4350 dollars.

Overall assessment

Why this response received Band 6.0

The response identifies the broad sales pattern and several important peaks, with clear comparisons that generally make the report easy to follow. Its main limitation is data accuracy: the Friday breakfast and lunch figures, Friday total, and especially Saturday dinner value are misreported. The highest priority is to verify every figure against the table before using it to support comparisons and daily totals.

TA

Task Achievement

6.0
Scoring rule

A clear overview and several accurate key comparisons are provided, but multiple figures and totals are misreported, particularly for Friday and Saturday.

Next step

Cross-check each selected value and calculate daily totals directly from the table before describing trends.

CC

Coherence and Cohesion

6.0
Scoring rule

The report follows a generally understandable sequence from the overview to daily comparisons, although presenting everything in one paragraph weakens organisation.

Next step

Separate the overview from two logically grouped detail paragraphs, such as weekdays and the weekend.

LR

Lexical Resource

6.0
Scoring rule

There is sufficient vocabulary for trends and comparisons, but several collocations are awkward or inaccurate, including expressions for sales amounts and increases.

Next step

Use precise combinations such as sales amounted to, total sales, and reached a weekly peak.

GRA

Grammatical Range and Accuracy

6.0
Scoring rule

A mix of simple and complex sentences communicates meaning, but recurring errors with possessives, articles, agreement, and comparative forms reduce control.

Next step

Proofread noun phrases and comparisons, especially dollars rather than dollar's and almost twice as high as rather than double than.
