Process diagram for an IELTS Academic Task 1 question about Leather Product Manufacturing Process.

Sample Response

The given diagram illustrates the eleven stages in which leather turned into shoes, Women’s purses, and other staff. Overall, during the process, leather is transferred to the factory two times, once for tanning and then for manufacturing leather products.

Once that animal skin is dried, it will be moved to the company, and then it will be washed with water and lime juice. The leather must rest in the same liquid to intake it, which takes a while. For flattening the leather, the wet skin will go through a rolling machine to be prepared for the next soaking stage.

Before polishing the leather, it’s necessary to tan the leather by lying the leather in a special liquid of water and a kind of vegetable for a while. Polishing leather with special tools under pressure is the final stage before moving it to the manufacturing company.

Finally there, the leathers will be measured, cut, designed, and made into variable products, namely different shoes, purses, leather balls, etc.

IELTS Writing Correction

  • 1. Add passive verb Original: in which leather turned Suggested revision: through which leather is turned Why it matters: The process requires the passive form because leather receives the transformation.
  • 2. Lowercase common noun Original: Women’s Suggested revision: women's Why it matters: A common noun within the list should not begin with a capital letter.
  • 3. Correct product word Original: staff Suggested revision: products Why it matters: 'Staff' means employees, whereas the diagram shows manufactured leather goods.
  • 4. Track material accurately Original: leather is transferred Suggested revision: the material is transported Why it matters: The first journey carries animal skin, while the later journey carries processed leather.
  • 5. Use concise frequency Original: two times Suggested revision: twice Why it matters: 'Twice' is the natural concise expression for two occurrences.
  • 6. Describe first treatment Original: once for tanning Suggested revision: first for treatment Why it matters: The first factory sequence includes washing, lime soaking, flattening, tanning and polishing, not tanning alone.
  • 7. Correct opening clause Original: Once that animal skin is dried Suggested revision: Once the animal skin has been dried Why it matters: The definite article and present-perfect passive correctly introduce the completed first stage.
  • 8. Use process language Original: moved to the company Suggested revision: transported to a factory Why it matters: The diagram shows transport by truck to a factory, so this wording is more precise.
  • 9. Correct washing material Original: lime juice Suggested revision: lime Why it matters: The diagram labels the washing mixture as water and lime, not lime juice.
  • 10. Use purpose clause Original: For flattening the leather Suggested revision: To flatten the leather Why it matters: An infinitive clause correctly expresses the purpose of this stage.
  • 11. Use passive process form Original: will go through Suggested revision: is passed through Why it matters: The passive form is appropriate because the skin is acted on by the machine.
  • 12. Name the rollers Original: a rolling machine Suggested revision: rollers Why it matters: The diagram depicts the skin being flattened between rollers.

Suggested Rewrites

  • in which leather turned through which leather is turned
  • Women’s women's

Overall assessment

Why this response received Band 6.0

The response follows the process in a generally clear sequence and covers most major stages from drying through manufacture. Its main weakness is precision: it mislabels lime as lime juice, gives a misleading account of the factory transfers, and adds unsupported actions such as measuring and cutting, while several word-choice and grammar errors reduce control. Prioritise describing only the labelled stages and materials, using accurate passive process language.

TA

Task Achievement

6.0
Scoring rule

Most principal stages are described in sequence, but the overview is partly misleading and several materials or actions are inaccurate or unsupported.

Next step

Report the exact labelled stages, including washing in water and lime, soaking in lime, tanning, polishing, transport, and manufacture, without adding inferred actions.

CC

Coherence and Cohesion

6.0
Scoring rule

The chronological organisation and paragraphing make the process easy to follow, although some references and transitions are imprecise.

Next step

Use a consistently staged sequence with clear links such as subsequently, after this, and once the hide has been polished.

LR

Lexical Resource

5.5
Scoring rule

The response has adequate process vocabulary, but frequent imprecise choices such as staff, intake, lying, and variable products weaken accuracy.

Next step

Learn precise process terms and collocations, including hide, soak, tanning solution, polish, transport, and various products.

GRA

Grammatical Range and Accuracy

5.5
Scoring rule

The response attempts varied passive and complex forms, but errors in verb forms, articles, plurals, and sentence structure occur regularly.

Next step

Use controlled passive clauses for each stage and check forms such as is dried, is transported, is soaked, and is made into.
