Why this response received Band 5.5
The essay correctly identifies the overall stability of the left side of the campus alongside the significant redevelopment on the right. However, repetitive descriptions and inaccurate phrasing reduce clarity when describing detailed map locations. To improve, focus on using precise compass directions and varied vocabulary for structural changes, while eliminating frequent grammatical errors in subject-verb agreement and sentence structure.
IELTS Writing Criteria Scores
Task Achievement
The response includes a clear overview and reports key changes between the two maps, though some details are clumsily explained.
Use precise directional phrasing such as north, south, and eastern section instead of vague terms like left and right sides.
Coherence and Cohesion
Information is arranged in separate paragraphs, but cohesive devices are repetitive and sometimes awkwardly placed.
Group similar map transformations together logically to avoid repeating dates and phrases across consecutive sentences.
Lexical Resource
The response attempts to describe spatial changes, but non-standard word choices and spelling errors lower precision.
Learn standard vocabulary for map tasks, such as demolished, constructed, replaced, and quarter, rather than non-standard forms like one forth.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy
A mix of simple and complex sentences is attempted, but grammatical errors in subject-verb agreement and prepositional use recur frequently.
Review tense consistency and subject-verb agreement to ensure plural subjects correctly match their verb forms.
