Sample Response

Dear Sarah,

I hope you and your family are doing well by the grace of the Almighty! I wanted to share an unforgettable experience with you. I recently attended the wedding of my cousin, Ayesha, here in Lahore, and it was absolutely magical. I thought you’d enjoy hearing about it, especially since you’ve always been curious about South Asian traditions.

Pakistani weddings are grand, colourful, and full of life. Ayesha’s wedding was spread over three days, starting with the Mehndi night, where everyone wore vibrant clothes, danced to traditional songs, and had henna designs applied. The next day was the Baraat - the main wedding event - where the groom arrived with his family in a beautifully decorated procession. Ayesha looked stunning in her red bridal dress, and the entire ceremony was emotional yet joyous. The final event was the Walima, a reception hosted by the groom’s family. The food throughout was incredible which included biryani, kebabs, korma, and traditional desserts like gulab jamun and ras malai. Everything was full of flavour and celebration.

I’d love for you to visit Pakistan someday. Our weddings are just one part of our rich culture, and I’m sure you’d enjoy exploring it all. Let me know if you ever plan a trip. I’ll make sure it’s a memorable one!

Warm regards,

Samira

IELTS Writing Correction

  • 1. Use natural event phrase Original: was spread over three days Suggested revision: took place over three days Why it matters: An event 'takes place' over a period; 'was spread' is less natural here.
  • 2. Use proper dashes Original: Baraat - the main wedding event - Suggested revision: Baraat—the main wedding event— Why it matters: Em dashes correctly mark the parenthetical explanation without spaced hyphens.
  • 3. Sentence rewrite Original: The food throughout was incredible which included biryani, kebabs, korma, and traditional desserts like gulab jamun and ras malai. Suggested revision: The food served throughout the celebrations was incredible and included biryani, kebabs, korma, and traditional desserts such as gulab jamun and ras malai. Why it matters: The rewrite fixes the faulty relative clause and clarifies what 'throughout' refers to.
  • 4. Sentence rewrite Original: Everything was full of flavour and celebration. Suggested revision: The whole celebration was full of flavour and joy. Why it matters: The revision gives 'everything' a clear referent and pairs two natural abstract nouns.
  • 5. Sentence rewrite Original: Our weddings are just one part of our rich culture, and I’m sure you’d enjoy exploring it all. Suggested revision: Pakistani weddings are only one part of our rich culture, and I’m sure you’d enjoy exploring the country. Why it matters: The rewrite makes the reference more explicit while preserving the friendly invitation.
  • 6. Add personal experience Suggested revision: Include one brief detail about what you personally did, felt or enjoyed during one of the three events. Why it matters: The paragraph describes the ceremony vividly but gives limited detail about the writer's own experience of attending it.
  • 7. Ease information flow Suggested revision: Start a new paragraph before the Walima or the food details to separate the sequence of events from the final reception description. Why it matters: The long paragraph carries several distinct stages and would be easier to follow with one clear break.
  • 8. Make invitation concrete Suggested revision: Add a possible visiting period or a clear offer to host and show your friend around. Why it matters: The invitation is present, but one practical detail would make it more purposeful and welcoming.

Overall assessment

Why this response received Band 8.5

The letter's strongest feature is its vivid, warmly personal account of the three-day wedding, which clearly identifies the bride, explains the Mehndi, Baraat and Walima, and closes with a genuine invitation to Pakistan. Communication is consistently natural; the main limitation is a slightly awkward relative clause introducing the food list and a few opportunities for more personal reflection. Prioritise one brief sentence about the writer's own favourite moment while keeping the concise structure.
