Band 7.0 IELTS General Training Writing Task 1 Correction

You were supposed to go on an interview in a few weeks, but you have since found out you cannot go on the date arranged. Write a letter to the potential employer. In your letter, tell them why you need to move the interview time ask to change the interview date explain that you are still interested in being interviewed for the job

Sample Response

Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing to request you to reschedule my interview on a later date. I will travel to Australia during the first week of September to attend some emergency office work which unfortunately contradicts my earlier schedule to meet you in a formal interview for the position of assistant manager in your company. I sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused due to this and I am hoping to meet you anytime after 8th September. I am supposed to meet you to further discuss my candidacy for the position of assistant manager in your reputed organisation on 5th September and I am really looking forward to that meeting. However, I was assigned to a new project recently and my current employer expects me to visit our Australian office during the first week of September. It will be a training programme from 4th till 7th September and I will be in Australia during this time. Considering the situation, I am hoping that you would agree to meet me at your convenient time, preferably after the 8th of September. I will be ready to meet you on 9th September if the schedule suits you. My sincere apologies for the request to reschedule the interview but I can assure you that I really am looking forward to meeting you in a formal interview as planned. I consider your company as one of the best places to work in and I hope that I would be able to prove my worth once hired. Thank you in advance. Yours faithfully, David Henderson

  • 1. Preposition pattern Original: reschedule my interview on a later date Suggested revision: reschedule my interview for a later date Why it matters: Use "reschedule for" when giving the new timing.
  • 2. Professional wording Original: some emergency office work Suggested revision: urgent work commitments Why it matters: This sounds more natural and professional.
  • 3. Wrong collocation Original: contradicts my earlier schedule Suggested revision: conflicts with my scheduled interview Why it matters: Schedules conflict; they do not usually "contradict" each other.
  • 4. Redundant cause Original: caused due to this Suggested revision: caused by this Why it matters: "Caused by" is the correct concise pattern.
  • 5. Formal request Original: I am hoping to meet you anytime after 8th September Suggested revision: I hope to meet you at any time after 8 September Why it matters: This is more formal and grammatically controlled.
  • 6. Natural praise Original: reputed organisation Suggested revision: respected organisation Why it matters: "Respected" sounds more natural in this context.
  • 7. Date range Original: from 4th till 7th September Suggested revision: from 4th to 7th September Why it matters: Use "from ... to" for a date range.
  • 8. Adjective form Original: at your convenient time Suggested revision: at a time convenient for you Why it matters: This is the natural structure after "time".
  • 9. Concise date Original: after the 8th of September Suggested revision: after 8 September Why it matters: This is a cleaner formal date style.
  • 10. Avoid repetition Original: My sincere apologies Suggested revision: Once again, I apologise Why it matters: This links the closing apology more smoothly to the earlier apology.
  • 11. Adverb position Original: I really am looking forward Suggested revision: I am really looking forward Why it matters: This is the more natural word order.
  • 12. Verb pattern Original: I consider your company as one of the best places Suggested revision: I consider your company one of the best places Why it matters: After "consider", "as" is usually unnecessary in this structure.

IELTS Writing Criteria Scores

Detailed feedback by IELTS writing criterion after the annotated essay.

TA

Task Achievement

8.0
Feedback

The letter clearly explains why the interview date must change, asks for a new date, and confirms continued interest in the job. The formal tone is appropriate for a potential employer.

Next step

State the original interview date and requested alternative in one concise early paragraph to reduce repetition.

CC

Coherence and Cohesion

7.0
Feedback

The progression is logical but repetitive: the reason, date, and interest are stated more than once. The one-paragraph format also makes the formal request less reader-friendly.

Next step

Use four short paragraphs: request, reason, availability, and reassurance of interest.

Lexical Resource

7.0
Feedback

Vocabulary is suitable for a professional letter, with phrases such as "reschedule", "candidacy", and "inconvenience caused". Some collocations are awkward, including "on a later date", "contradicts my earlier schedule", and "reputed organisation".

Next step

Use standard interview phrases such as "reschedule for a later date" and "conflicts with my interview appointment".

GRA

Grammatical Range and Accuracy

6.5
Feedback

Meaning is clear and there are several complex sentences, but grammar is weakened by preposition errors, missing commas, and awkward clause structures.

Next step

Check prepositions after "reschedule", date ranges, and comma placement in long formal sentences.
