Sample Response

Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing this letter to publish an advertisement in your newspaper to find a suitable student as a tenant for a single room in my 3 bedroom apartment. To describe the apartment a little, it is about 1100 square feet, located on the second floor at Hampshire resident, fully furnished and has a lot of open space around it. Out of the 3 rooms, two rooms are already occupied while the other room, which is around 330 square feet, is empty and can accommodate one person very easily. Besides, the apartment has all the modern amenities, including a satellite cable line for TV, broadband internet connection and hot water. As for the tenant, I would prefer him to be quiet, gentle and non-smoker. Besides, I also want him to be aware of personal hygiene who does not mind keeping the apartment reasonably clean and who can pay the rent on time. Anyway, now that you have all the necessary information for the advertisement, please arrange to publish it from the day after tomorrow which is the 9th of August, and end publishing it at the end of the month. I will transfer the publication fee electronically to your business account before 9th August. Yours faithfully, James Cover

IELTS Writing Correction

  • 1. Use standard terminology Original: a satellite cable line for TV Suggested revision: a satellite TV connection Why it matters: This is the more natural term for the stated apartment facility.
  • 2. Use a clear relative clause Original: I would prefer him to be Suggested revision: I would prefer a tenant who is Why it matters: This structure describes the preferred tenant directly and avoids assuming the applicant’s gender.
  • 3. Choose a suitable trait Original: gentle Suggested revision: considerate Why it matters: “Considerate” more precisely describes desirable behaviour in a shared apartment.
  • 4. Add the article Original: non-smoker Suggested revision: a non-smoker Why it matters: The singular countable noun requires an article in this complement.
  • 5. Set off added detail Original: the day after tomorrow which Suggested revision: the day after tomorrow, which Why it matters: A comma is needed before the non-defining clause that supplies the date.
  • 6. Use natural advert wording Original: end publishing it Suggested revision: stop running it Why it matters: Advertisements are normally said to “run” for a stated period.
  • 7. Sentence rewrite Original: To describe the apartment a little, it is about 1100 square feet, located on the second floor at Hampshire resident, fully furnished and has a lot of open space around it. Suggested revision: To describe the apartment briefly, it is a fully furnished, 1,100-square-foot property on the second floor of a Hampshire residence, with plenty of open space around it. Why it matters: The rewrite fixes faulty parallel structure, the incorrect noun “resident,” and compound-modifier punctuation.
  • 8. Sentence rewrite Original: Besides, I also want him to be aware of personal hygiene who does not mind keeping the apartment reasonably clean and who can pay the rent on time. Suggested revision: Besides, I would prefer someone who maintains good personal hygiene, helps keep the apartment reasonably clean, and pays the rent on time. Why it matters: The rewrite gives the relative clause a clear antecedent and creates a parallel list of qualities.
  • 9. Organise by bullet point Suggested revision: Use separate body paragraphs for the apartment and facilities, preferred tenant, and publication and payment details. Why it matters: Grouping the requested information by purpose would make the advert instructions easier to scan.

Overall assessment

Why this response received Band 7.0

The letter fulfils its advertising purpose well by giving detailed information about the apartment, the preferred tenant, the publication period, and payment, while maintaining an appropriately formal relationship with the newspaper. The main weakness is language control: several awkward collocations and faulty sentence structures reduce naturalness, and the one-paragraph presentation limits clarity; prioritise accurate sentence construction and functional paragraphing.

Task Achievement

8.0
Feedback

All three bullet points are addressed directly and in sufficient detail, with a clear purpose and generally appropriate formal tone.

Next step

Refine the publication request by stating the exact start and end dates more directly and formally.

CC

Coherence and Cohesion

6.5
Feedback

The information follows a sensible sequence, but the entire letter is presented as one paragraph and some linking expressions are mechanical.

Next step

Use separate paragraphs for the property, tenant preferences, and publication and payment arrangements.

LR

Lexical Resource

6.5
Feedback

There is sufficient vocabulary to describe accommodation and advertising, but several choices such as "Hampshire resident" and "satellite cable line" are imprecise or unnatural.

Next step

Use accurate accommodation collocations, such as "Hampshire Residence" and "satellite television," and avoid conversational fillers such as "Anyway."

GRA

Grammatical Range and Accuracy

6.5
Feedback

The response attempts a range of complex structures, but agreement, article, coordination, and relative-clause errors occur noticeably while meaning remains clear.

Next step

Revise faulty structures such as "fully furnished and has" and "quiet, gentle and non-smoker" so parallel forms and articles are consistently accurate.
