The question of whether animals should be used to test medicines has divided public opinion into two distinct camps. On the one hand, a large proportion of people maintain that animal testing is beneficial to human health, while opponents argue that it is cruel and inhumane to carry out medical tests on animals because animals are also living creatures. I will analyse these two opposing viewpoints before presenting my own perspective.

2

On the one hand, thereFirst of all, there is no denying that people have different methods to innovate and develop medicines that can treat complex diseases. For example, although recruiting human volunteers to test the effectiveness and toxicity of newly-developed medicines is feasible, it is extremely expensive. Since there are plenty of animal subjectssamples to conduct medical experiments, carrying out tests on animals is much cheaper. Additionally, animal testing can lay a solid foundation for medical innovation. Animals like chimpanzees and monkeys, which sharemonkeys which share similar biological structures and genes serve as ideal subjects for medical testing, which enables people to identifyverify the side effects of medicines, ensuring that only effective and safe medicines can enter clinical trials.

3

On the other hand, it is immoral to kill animals for human purposes, no matter what kinds of animals they are. Most of them are sentient beingsspecies, which can experience pain and have emotions. Testing the effectiveness of new medicines on animals tends to be detrimental to their health or even pose a serious threat to their lives. What’s more, because of the physiological differences between animals and humansdifferent body structures between animals and humans, opposite results may occur when humans take new medicines. We cannot rely on inconclusive dataunreliable test results to guarantee our safety.

4

From my perspective, using animals for testing is practical and necessary since it can significantly reduce the risks imposed on patients in clinical trials, contributing to the research and development of medicines. However, since animals are sentient beings which also experience pain during experiments, scientists and medical professionals are advised to regulate experimental proceduresbehaviors or develop cutting-edge technologiestechnology like computer simulation to alleviate the suffering of animals.
