It is sometimes argued that testing drivers each year is the most effective way to improve road safety. From my perspective, I generally agree with this view.
One strong argument in favor of this view is that it could improve people's driving skills on average. People's driving skills could decline when they do not drive their cars regularlyquite often, especially for people who have just obtained theirjust get their driving licenses. Even an experienced driver could forget some road rules. Therefore, having a test each year could give every driver an opportunity to refresh their knowledge ofbe familiar with traffic rules and improve their driving skills. Furthermore, it could also identify individualsit could also find people who passed the test in the past but cannot meet today's driving requirements. For example, elderly individualsan old people, such as senior citizenslike our grandfathers, could pass the driving test when they were young, but they are unable to drive cars currently because of physicalphythical conditions. Testing them each year then could avoid these kinds of people driving on the street. As a result, people's average driving skills could improve and that may lead to a safer driving environment.
However, a common objection to this idea lies in wasting time. Drivers may only sacrificecost their free time to take the test. Most people who drive on the street have to workshould work for companies on weekdays. Consequently, SundayAs a result, Sunday and Saturday are the only two days on which theydays which they could take this test. They may lose their time to relax and recharge, or accompany their families.
Admittedly, wasting time is a genuine concern. Even so, this concern is manageable. Governments could design and implement some special laws which allow a proportionpart of drivers to pass this test automatically. One case is that drivers who do not make any traffic accidents in the past five yearsin past five years could drive on the street without taking any tests.
In conclusion, although time wasting is a valid concernis worth concerning, I still believe that getting drivers tested each year could improve our driving safety effectively, since these tests could encourage responsible driving and reinforce road competencemake people drive better.
