The best way to make the road transport of goods safer is to ask drivers to take a driving test each year. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Sample Response
Transportation of goods and services via road is the safest and cheapest way of the supply chain. However, there are many people who think drivers should go for their driving test every year to keep the goods on the safe side. I totally disagree with the statement, and I will explain my view in the following paragraph.
Firstly, as we all know, goods transported by road are the cheapest source of transportation in the supply chain compared to other means of communication. For example, a free trade agreement between USMCA (United States, Mexico and Canada) in which these countries don’t have to pay taxes on the borders as per their policy. Moreover, Truck drivers also don’t have to worry about their driving abstract that they had to renew every year.
Furthermore, if truckers had to go for the driving test every year and had to renew their driving license by giving a driving test, it would be a really challenging situation for them to work in this profession. As we already have a shortage of truckers across the world and if we will impose any kind of new amendments, like going for the road test every year, that will create chaos in the supply chain industry. Although, if the government wants to make the goods safer and more secure, they should regularly check the logbooks of the driver and they should also install some cameras or sensors on the trucks which will keep the goods safer.
To summarise, the government should not make any such changes that will impact the whole industry.
IELTS Writing Correction
- 1. Use test collocation Original: go for their driving test Suggested revision: take a driving test Why it matters: English uses 'take a test' for participation in an examination.
- 2. Clarify safety aim Original: keep the goods on the safe side Suggested revision: make goods transport safer Why it matters: The idiom 'on the safe side' does not clearly describe transport safety here.
- 3. Use transport collocation Original: source of transportation Suggested revision: mode of transport Why it matters: A road is a mode of transport rather than a source of transportation.
- 4. Name transport modes Original: other means of communication Suggested revision: other modes of transport Why it matters: 'Communication' does not refer clearly to alternative ways of moving goods.
- 5. Use lowercase noun Original: Truck Suggested revision: truck Why it matters: A common noun within a sentence should not be capitalized.
- 6. Use clearer term Original: abstract Suggested revision: record Why it matters: 'Driving record' is more widely understood for a driver's official history.
- 7. Fix tense and reference Original: that they had to renew every year Suggested revision: which they have to renew every year Why it matters: The relative clause describes a current recurring requirement, so the present tense is needed.
- 8. Fix linking word Original: Although Suggested revision: However Why it matters: 'Although' cannot stand alone before this complete conditional clause, whereas 'however' can link it to the contrast.
- 9. Use plural possessive Original: logbooks of the driver Suggested revision: drivers' logbooks Why it matters: The general reference is to the logbooks belonging to multiple drivers.
- 10. Match essay structure Original: paragraph Suggested revision: paragraphs Why it matters: More than one body paragraph follows, so the plural noun is required.
- 11. Fix subject meaning Original: goods transported by road are the cheapest Suggested revision: transporting goods by road is the cheapest Why it matters: The transport method, rather than the goods themselves, is being compared for cost.
- 12. Avoid duplicate addition Original: also don’t have to worry Suggested revision: do not have to worry Why it matters: 'Moreover' already signals an additional point, so 'also' is redundant.

Why this response received Band 6.0
The response states a consistent disagreement and offers a relevant central argument that annual testing could worsen driver shortages, alongside alternative safety measures. Development is uneven because the discussion of cheap transport and the USMCA trade agreement does not explain road safety, and the conclusion is minimal. The highest priority is to replace irrelevant material with direct evidence showing why logbook checks, cameras or sensors would improve safety more effectively than yearly tests.
IELTS Writing Criteria Scores
Task Response
The position is clear and one relevant objection plus alternatives are presented, but substantial material is irrelevant to safety and the key claims lack support.
Remove the trade-cost discussion and develop direct comparisons showing why annual tests would be ineffective and why the alternatives would work better.
Coherence and Cohesion
The essay has a clear overall sequence and appropriate paragraphing, although the first body paragraph does not advance the central argument and linking is sometimes mechanical.
Give each body paragraph a safety-focused controlling idea and ensure every example directly supports that idea before moving on.
Lexical Resource
The response uses adequate vocabulary for transport and regulation, but repetition and several inaccurate phrases limit precision.
Use more exact safety language and replace awkward expressions with standard terms such as driving record, road freight and safety monitoring.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy
Both simple and complex forms are used, but sentence fragments, faulty conditional forms and agreement or reference errors recur.
Practise complete example sentences and accurate conditional patterns, especially avoiding will in the if-clause when describing hypothetical consequences.
