It is sometimes argued that banning all forms of advertising could benefitbenifit societythe society, since the damage of advertising outweighs its usefulnessweigh out their usefulness. From my perspectiveprospective, I generally disagree with this viewdisagree this view.
One strong argument in favor of this view concerns people's power of judgmentability of judgement. For people who could not tell the real effect of advertisementstell real effect of advertisementst, they may believe what advertisements saysaid easily. As a result, they may waste their money and time because they do not obtain things which they exactly want. This directly supports the idea that society would become better if all forms of advertising are banned. For example, older generations such as our grandparents would buy nothing from advertisementsadvertisments when all types of advertising are unavailable. In that case, they may not spend their money buying things on advertisements which may exaggerate their real functions.
However, a common objection to this view lies in laws of advertising. Governments could design and implement laws of advertising. They could punish companies heavily if they exaggerate the benefits ofexpand effects of their products in advertising, so companies may lose incentives to exaggerate effects of their goods. Therefore, peopleTherefore people could trust advertisements and buy products which they really need. At that moment, advertising actually expands people's ways of approaching products in different fields. This is why imposinggiving a ban on all forms of advertising is not always fair. A case in point: if advertisements are always true, people who have no idea about sports could choose and compare different runningrunner shoes without any effort through advertisements on TV. Advertising may give them more opportunitiesoppotunities to approach products. Admittedly, the real effect of advertising is a genuine concern, particularly for older generations. Even so, it is often manageablemanagable because of relevantrelative laws. So this drawback is less decisive.
In conclusion, although olderold generations' judgement skills are worth considering, I still believe that advertising has benefitsbenifis to society overall and we could not ban all forms of it.
