Young people often have ideas or attitudes that are different to those of their parents or grandparents. How do ideas and attitudes differ between generations in your society? Do you think that these differences cause any problems?
Sample Response
The ideas of the younger generation and their previous generations differ in several ways and I believe there are numerous problems leading to these differences which sometimes cannot be solved if there are no adjustments. My essay will provide clear reasons for the topic with examples.
To begin with, the mindset of the parents/ grandparents is way limited and traditional, and as they do not experience the world from outside and live on their own terms. In most cases, they expect their children or grandchildren to follow their set terms and policies to succeed in life. On the other hand, the attitudes of youth are fast as well as innovative, and they would love to explore life differently and achieve heights in this busy world so-called rate-race. They cannot understand a few old-school principles set by their parents and try to solve problems independently.
The significant changes in these behaviors not only affect the lifestyle but also their relationship in families. These differences lead to separation from each other, sometimes treating the older people adversely and create several arguments between parents and children. For example, one of my relative’s parents stays separately in the old-age home as they accept the fact that they cannot cope up with their children’s mentalities and frequent disagreements lead to serious health problems such as high blood pressure and panic attacks.
To conclude, often attitudes are different between both youth and older people; one should try to adjust by respecting each other’s decisions and lead happy lives or be ready to face the problems.
IELTS Writing Correction
- 1. Use accurate comparison Original: their previous generations Suggested revision: older generations Why it matters: Previous generations is an unnatural way to refer to parents and grandparents here.
- 2. Correct cause and effect Original: problems leading to these differences Suggested revision: problems caused by these differences Why it matters: The current wording reverses the intended cause-and-effect relationship.
- 3. Use concise condition Original: if there are no adjustments Suggested revision: without adjustments Why it matters: This replacement expresses the negative condition more naturally and concisely.
- 4. Name the issue Original: reasons for the topic Suggested revision: reasons for these differences Why it matters: Reasons apply to the generational differences rather than to a topic itself.
- 5. Join paired nouns Original: parents/ grandparents Suggested revision: parents and grandparents Why it matters: Use and to coordinate the two family groups in formal prose.
- 6. Use formal degree Original: way Suggested revision: very Why it matters: Way is an informal and imprecise degree modifier in this context.
- 7. Fix clause connection Original: , and as they do not Suggested revision: because they do not Why it matters: Because correctly connects the stated characteristic with its proposed reason.
- 8. Use natural expression Original: experience the world from outside Suggested revision: experience the wider world Why it matters: The wider world is the natural expression for experience beyond one's immediate environment.
- 9. Choose suitable nouns Original: set terms and policies Suggested revision: established rules and expectations Why it matters: Rules and expectations describe family demands more precisely than terms and policies.
- 10. Express change clearly Original: attitudes of youth are fast Suggested revision: attitudes of young people change quickly Why it matters: Attitudes cannot literally be fast, so the wording should identify rapid change.
- 11. Coordinate descriptions Original: as well as innovative Suggested revision: and are innovative Why it matters: The added verb creates clear and parallel coordination with change quickly.
- 12. Use natural collocation Original: heights Suggested revision: success Why it matters: Achieve success is the natural collocation for the intended meaning.

Why this response received Band 6.0
The response’s strongest feature is its clear four-paragraph progression from generational contrasts to resulting family problems, supported by a relevant personal example. However, the ideas are only briefly developed and frequent awkward collocations and grammatical errors reduce precision, especially in longer sentences. The highest priority is to explain each claimed difference or consequence more fully while using shorter, accurately controlled sentences.
IELTS Writing Criteria Scores
Task Response
The response addresses both questions and maintains a clear view that generational differences create family conflict, though its explanations remain somewhat general and brief.
Develop each main point by explaining why the difference occurs and tracing a specific consequence before moving to the next idea.
Coherence and Cohesion
The four-paragraph structure gives the response a broadly logical progression, but some linking is mechanical and overloaded sentences blur relationships between ideas.
Use sharper topic sentences and separate causes, consequences, and examples into clearly connected sentences.
Lexical Resource
The vocabulary is adequate and includes some less common items, but awkward collocations and imprecise choices such as “attitudes of youth are fast” recur.
Replace unnatural phrases with precise combinations such as “young people adapt quickly” and “cope with their children’s attitudes.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy
The response attempts both simple and complex forms, but frequent errors in clause construction, agreement, and parallelism weaken control, especially in longer sentences.
Divide long sentences and check that every clause has a complete structure, consistent subject-verb agreement, and parallel verb forms.
