1

Despite remarkable progress in agricultural technology, hunger remains a pervasive global challenge. In my view, this persistent issue stems from three interrelated factors: climate change, regional armed conflict, andregional armed conflict and widespread food waste. While modern farming can boostlift food output in stable regions, these barriers prevent technological gains from ending global hunger.

2

Climate change is the primary force reducing worldwide food production. More frequent and intense extreme weather, such as severe floods and droughts, directly diminishes crop yieldsdirectly cuts harvests. Beyond immediate crop losses, it creates linked environmental harm including soil erosion and locust outbreaks, bothmany of which are extremely costly or technically challenging to mitigatetechnically difficult to tackle. Even where improved farming methods exist, low-income regions frequently lack the funding and infrastructure to adopt them. Taken together, these environmental pressures restrict farm productivity. Natural disasters can cause damage too severe for agricultural innovations to reverse, perpetuating food insecurity.

3

Aside from environmental threats, armed conflict keeps hunger prevalent even with agricultural improvements. Warfare forces farming communities to flee, leaving large areas of fertile farmland untended. Yemen provides a powerful real-world illustration: millions of farmers have become displaced personsrefugees, unable to tend crops and entirely reliant onreliant entirely on international food aid. As conflicts escalate, more farmland lies abandoned and agricultural workers lose their livelihoods. This creates a self-reinforcing cycle of shortages that no farming technology alone can break.

4

Food waste is another under-recognizedrecognised driver of hunger, even as crop yields rise. Waste occurs across the whole supply chain, from storage and transport to end consumers. In sub-Saharan Africa, roughly one-third of harvested food rots before reaching markets due to inadequate cold storage. In wealthier economies, supermarkets discardthrow away large quantities of edible produce to maintain aesthetic shelf standardstidy shelf displays. Though individual waste may appear trivial, its combined global impact is substantial; higher farm output therefore fails to feed everyone.

5

In conclusion, although agricultural innovation has increased crop yields, hunger endures largely because of climate shocks, armed conflict and systemic food waste. Resolving this issue demands coordinated international effort. Governments and NGOs should prioritise environmental protection, encourage the peaceful settlementencourage peaceful settlement of armed disputes, and introduce measures to cut supply-chain food waste, for example by funding cold storage for small-scale farmers. Individuals can also help by consuming food more thoughtfully and reducing domestic food wastecutting household wastage.
