Road safety issues are claiming over 1.3 million lives each year according to reports from the World Health Organization(WHO). Yet those who suffer from accidents are the innocent and the vulnerable. To avoid such tragedies, people are seeking ways to improve road safety. Some argue that the best way tois tackle this is to increase the minimum legal age for driving a vehicle. While this measure may offer some benefits, there isare a wider range of other factors that should also be addressed. Otherwise, it will be unrealistic to achieve comprehensive results in the long run.

3

First of all, age alone is not the sole reason for road safety problems, so measures should not easily be taken before the true causes of road fatalities are clarified. According to statistics from WHO, the top-ranking causes for road fatalities are distracted driving, speeding, and drunk driving. For distracted driving, particularly, eating or drinking, texting or calling while driving, and simply adjusting the radio can all lead to potential danger. For example, a working mother who was driving her child to school one day spent several seconds replying to a WhatsApp messagereplying a Whatsapp message when she“drifted to the next lane and bumped into a motorcyclist.” As such, drivers of working age, who do not pay full attention when driving, can equally be responsible forcan just be culprits of road injuries and deaths. Therefore, we should endeavor to raise awareness of safe-driving among adult drivers who typically tend to drive with distraction or under the influence of alcohol.

4

Second, compared to raising the legal age of driving, comprehensive driver training and a more consistent and stricter enforcement of traffic laws would address a wider range of risks. For example, regardless of the age of the drivers, if people are found to engage in any illegal driving behaviors, they should face serious consequences. Punishments in the form of finesfining, penalty points on driving recordspoints deduction from drivers’ credits, or suspension of driving licencessuspension of drivers’ license can all help deter offenders. Nevertheless, not all road accidents result from deliberate violations of traffic laws. Penalties cannot compensate for inadequate driving skills. Therefore, improving road infrastructure is equally important. For instance, better lighting and clearer road signs can help drivers identify hazards earlier, thus avoiding unnecessary injuries.

5

In a nutshell, improving road safety calls for coordinated effortscalls for a coordinated efforts from individuals and society alike. If a thorough investigation could be done to reveal the leading causes of road offences and legislatorslegislations could introduce laws and provide effective training, the overall safety condition on the road could be better guaranteed.
