Nowadays, some parents put a lot of pressure on their children. What is the reason for this? Is this a positive or negative development for the children?

Sample Response

Nowadays, many parents place considerable pressure on their children to achieve academic or personal success. This trend is largely driven by increasingly competitive societies and parents' high expectations for their children's future. Although such pressure may occasionally motivate children to perform better, I believe it is overall a negative development due to its harmful effects on their mental health and personal growth.

There are two main reasons why some parents place excessive demands on their children. Chief among these is the growing competition in education and the job market. Since academic qualifications are often regarded as the key to future success, many parents become concerned that their children may fall behind their peers. As a result, they encourage them to attend additional classes, participate in numerous extracurricular activities, and constantly strive for higher achievements. Another contributing factor is that some parents project their own ambitions onto their children. In other words, they expect their sons or daughters to accomplish goals that they themselves were unable to achieve, often without adequately considering the children's own interests or aspirations.

In my opinion, this is a negative development for several reasons. The most significant drawback is that excessive pressure can seriously damage children's psychological well-being. Constant expectations may create persistent stress and anxiety, causing them to associate learning with fear rather than curiosity. For example, children who are repeatedly criticized for minor mistakes may gradually lose confidence in their own abilities. Another disadvantage is that excessive parental control can hinder the development of independence. When parents make most important decisions on behalf of their children, young people have fewer opportunities to develop critical thinking and decision-making skills, making it more difficult for them to become self-reliant adults.

In conclusion, parental pressure mainly stems from intense educational competition and unrealistic expectations. Despite its intention to secure a better future for children, I believe this trend is ultimately detrimental because it undermines both their emotional well-being and their ability to develop into independent individuals.

Overall assessment

Why this response received Band 8.0

The response fully answers both questions with a clear position, relevant development, and consistently controlled language; the explanation of competition, projected ambitions, mental health, and independence is especially effective. The main limitation is that several ideas remain broadly framed and the organization follows a fairly predictable template. To strengthen an already accomplished essay, add a little more specific causal nuance and vary the way supporting points are introduced.
