Sample Response

Certain people opt to go to College or University for a variety of purposes. One of the reasons is to gain more experiences. Other factors are for career preparation and to enhance one's knowledge. This essay will discuss the reasons why people prefer to go to a Higher Educational System.

It is believed that an individual, who has a College degree, will have the chance to find a full time and stable job. Nowadays, holding a College diploma is one of the requirements for many job companies. Moreover, attending College or University will provide the opportunity for the students to be exposed to new experiences. For example, meeting new friends and having an expanded awareness of self would make an individual grow up because the student will be disclosed to a new environment. By saying this, students have lots of opportunities to face challenges while studying at the University or College.

In addition, students going to Colleges will prepare oneself in achieving their dream job or career. It is also a chance that students will be trained to a higher level of learning. Most of the Colleges and Universities at present are offering specialised courses like technical skills. These courses are also attended by many people because of their interests and at the same time to gain more proficiency in one's field of concern. An example of this is knowledge about computers and electronic systems.

In conclusion, getting an additional learning, gathering new experiences and preparing for a career opportunity in the future are the main reasons for many people who want to have a higher educational learning. In this way, students will have the chance to find a better job in the future.

IELTS Writing Correction

  • 1. Use uncountable experience Original: gain more experiences Suggested revision: gain more experience Why it matters: “Experience” is uncountable when it means general knowledge gained through life.
  • 2. Make reasons parallel Original: Other factors are for career preparation and to enhance Suggested revision: Other reasons are to prepare for a career and to enhance Why it matters: Both reasons should use parallel infinitive structures.
  • 3. Use standard term Original: a Higher Educational System Suggested revision: higher education Why it matters: The intended general concept is “higher education”, not a particular educational system.
  • 4. Remove restrictive commas Original: an individual, who has a College degree, Suggested revision: an individual who has a college degree Why it matters: The defining relative clause should not be separated by commas, and “college” is not a proper noun here.
  • 5. Use precise employer term Original: many job companies Suggested revision: many employers Why it matters: “Job companies” is not a natural term for organisations that hire workers.
  • 6. Express maturation clearly Original: would make an individual grow up Suggested revision: can help an individual mature Why it matters: “Mature” states personal development more precisely than the informal phrasal verb.
  • 7. Correct passive verb Original: the student will be disclosed to a new environment Suggested revision: students will be exposed to a new environment Why it matters: People are “exposed to” an environment; “disclosed” means revealed.
  • 8. Use logical connector Original: By saying this Suggested revision: In this way Why it matters: The revision links the new-environment idea to the opportunities that result from it.
  • 9. Use formal quantity Original: lots of opportunities Suggested revision: many opportunities Why it matters: “Many” is more concise and suitable for formal writing.
  • 10. Fix attendance phrase Original: students going to Colleges Suggested revision: students who attend college Why it matters: The relative clause expresses regular attendance naturally, and “college” needs no capital letter.
  • 11. Match plural pronoun Original: will prepare oneself Suggested revision: can prepare themselves Why it matters: The reflexive pronoun must agree with plural “students”.
  • 12. Fix infinitive pattern Original: in achieving their dream job Suggested revision: to achieve their dream job Why it matters: The verb “prepare” takes an infinitive for the intended purpose.

Overall assessment

Why this response received Band 6.5

The response answers the question with a clear set of reasons, especially employment, career preparation, specialised learning, and personal growth, and it uses relevant examples. Its main limitation is repetition: career prospects dominate both body paragraphs, while the examples of knowledge and new experience remain fairly general. Prioritise sharper separation of the main reasons and develop each with one concrete outcome or personal illustration, using more natural academic phrasing.
