More and more tasks we do at home and at work these days are done by robots. Is this a positive or negative development?

Sample Response

It is undeniable that robots are increasingly performing tasks at home and in the workplace, transforming the way we live and work. While automation brings certain gains in efficiency and convenience, I believe that its social and economic repercussions are of greater significance.

It is true that the deployment of robotic systems streamlines tasks and elevates comfort in both professional and domestic spheres. Regarding the former, industrial and service robots boost productivity and accuracy in the workplace. By executing repetitive or complex operations without experiencing fatigue, robots maintain consistent performance levels. As a consequence, automation yields faster throughput and significantly fewer human errors. Moreover, home robotics create more free time and greater comfort for residents. To illustrate, devices such as robotic vacuum cleaners, automated appliance controllers, and assistive robots for the elderly handle routine household chores. Thus, household automation enhances quality of life and reduces stress.

However, an overdependence on automation creates significant social and economic problems which can overshadow these benefits. To begin with, one major issue is job displacement, which arises when machines replace human roles across industries. This is because robotics and AI systems can perform manufacturing, administrative, and service tasks previously handled by workers. As a result, automation drives unemployment and exacerbates economic inequality, as displaced employees struggle to find new work. Another problem worth mentioning is the excessive use of robots and digital assistants, which undermines essential interpersonal skills. For example, relying on voice-activated helpers or automated chatbots for routine interactions can erode users’ communication and problem-solving abilities. Ultimately, tech dependence leads to lower social competence and an unhealthy overreliance on machines for even simple decisions.

In conclusion, although robotic automation delivers undeniable benefits in productivity and personal convenience, I maintain that its negative implications—namely job loss and the erosion of human capabilities—outweigh these advantages.

IELTS Writing Correction

  • 1. State comparison directly Original: repercussions are of greater significance Suggested revision: negative repercussions outweigh these gains Why it matters: The replacement expresses the comparison more directly and precisely.
  • 2. Use natural collocation Original: elevates Suggested revision: increases Why it matters: "Increases comfort" is a more natural collocation in this context.
  • 3. Clarify the reference Original: Regarding the former Suggested revision: In professional settings Why it matters: Naming the setting directly removes a momentarily vague backward reference.
  • 4. Refine throughput wording Original: yields faster throughput Suggested revision: increases throughput Why it matters: Throughput is normally described as higher or increased rather than faster.
  • 5. Use familiar term Original: home robotics Suggested revision: domestic robots Why it matters: "Domestic robots" refers more naturally to household devices.
  • 6. Improve collocation Original: create more free time Suggested revision: give residents more free time Why it matters: The revision uses a more natural verb and makes the beneficiary explicit.
  • 7. Use clearer wording Original: automated appliance controllers Suggested revision: smart appliance controls Why it matters: The replacement is more concise and readily understandable.
  • 8. Qualify the causal claim Original: drives unemployment Suggested revision: can increase unemployment Why it matters: The modal verb presents the proposed consequence with appropriate precision.
  • 9. Make wording concise Original: excessive use of robots and digital assistants Suggested revision: overuse of robots and digital assistants Why it matters: "Overuse" conveys the same meaning more economically.
  • 10. Keep formal register Original: tech Suggested revision: technological Why it matters: "Technological" better matches the essay's otherwise formal register.
  • 11. Use natural collocation Original: lower Suggested revision: reduced Why it matters: "Reduced social competence" is the more natural formal collocation.

Overall assessment

Why this response received Band 8.0

The response is strongest in its clear, sustained position and well-developed explanation of both the practical benefits and broader costs of automation. Its main limitation is that some examples and claims, particularly about declining interpersonal abilities, remain somewhat general rather than analytically tested. The highest-priority improvement is to make the causal support for that social argument more specific and nuanced.
