Too much emphasis is placed on going to university for academic education. People should be encouraged to do vocational training because there is a lack of qualified tradespeople such as electricians or plumbers. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Sample Response

There has always been an ever-pervasive argument when it comes to the essence and necessity of formal academic education and professional courses for the students. Some people say as there is a pronounced paucity of qualified and educated professionals such as electricians, more stress should be exerted on the vocational training. I find myself agreeing to this statement and in the following paragraphs, I shall be talking about the same.

The first and the prime reason for the inclination towards vocational training shall be the faster and promising employability post the completion of such practical and applicable courses. As is known to all, there is a dearth of such trained and educated employees and hence, the gradient of demand-supply is pretty persistent in such cases, and therefore, the better job prospects for the trainees. Secondly, the courses they choose to go for are typically around the emphatic curricula of a course in particular. Unlike academic qualifications, where one goes through the entire rigmarole and clamour of the additional and secondary syllabus that might not even be distantly related to the considered course subject. Therefore, while undergoing the classes of such vocations, there is staunch andragogy of hardcore learning that finds the implications in the real life.

Moreover, our academic education system has considerable anomalies and when the point of application of the facts and knowledge imparted in the institutions arises. Many a time it has been that there is a concept of rote learning in these educational hubs and students are hardly left with any logical understanding that categorically helps them in picturizing it to the concrete reality. Similarly, they are made to cram and jam the pages of their textbooks that they are hardly able to take away any plausible or heuristic applicability of it. Owing to this, a generic perspective to studies, majorly at bachelor’s level that hardly finds any implementation, finishes with the untrained and naive graduates striving hard to seek employment.

Though education is important when it comes to academic knowledge, learning everything under the sun renders a person over-soaked with unprocessed and superfluous knowledge.

Conclusion thus could be focussing more on the quintessential need of the hour and the avenues of vocational coaching for the better career prospects of people as well as the betterment of society.

IELTS Writing Correction

  • 1. Use natural phrasing Original: ever-pervasive Suggested revision: long-standing Why it matters: This adjective is unnecessarily inflated and is not a natural collocation with “argument.”
  • 2. Name the course type Original: professional courses for the students Suggested revision: vocational courses for students Why it matters: This wording refers more precisely to the kind of training discussed in the task.
  • 3. Correct preposition Original: to Suggested revision: with Why it matters: The verb “agree” takes “with” when referring to a statement or view.
  • 4. Clarify the reference Original: talking about the same Suggested revision: explaining my reasons Why it matters: This replacement avoids a vague reference and states the paragraph purpose directly.
  • 5. Remove redundancy Original: The first and the prime reason Suggested revision: The primary reason Why it matters: “First” and “prime” express the same idea here.
  • 6. Use present tense Original: vocational training shall be Suggested revision: vocational training is Why it matters: The sentence states a current reason, so the simple present is appropriate.
  • 7. Fix the collocation Original: faster and promising employability Suggested revision: faster and more promising employment prospects Why it matters: “Employability” does not naturally describe the speed and promise of obtaining work.
  • 8. Use a clear clause Original: post the completion of Suggested revision: after completing Why it matters: This construction is more grammatical and direct in the sentence.
  • 9. Tighten the wording Original: courses they choose to go for Suggested revision: courses they choose Why it matters: “Go for” is unnecessary and makes the phrase wordy.
  • 10. Use correct collocation Original: classes of such vocations Suggested revision: vocational classes Why it matters: “Classes of vocations” is not an idiomatic way to describe vocational instruction.
  • 11. Replace unnatural wording Original: staunch andragogy of hardcore learning Suggested revision: a strong emphasis on practical learning Why it matters: The original cluster of terms is opaque and does not convey the intended meaning naturally.
  • 12. Fix verb construction Original: finds the implications in the real life Suggested revision: has applications in real life Why it matters: The original verb phrase is ungrammatical and uses the wrong noun for practical use.

Overall assessment

Why this response received Band 6.5

The response presents a clear position and offers several relevant reasons for prioritising vocational training, with its discussion of employability and practical learning providing the strongest support. Its main limitation is that frequent imprecise, inflated phrasing and some incomplete or awkward sentences obscure otherwise logical ideas. The highest priority is to express each argument in simpler, accurate language and develop it with a specific example.
