The unlimited use of cars may cause many problems. What are those problems? In order to reduce the problems, should we discourage people to use cars?
Sample Response
Someone has rightly said:said that – “The car has become an item of clothingarticle of dress without which we feel uncertain, unclad, and incomplete.”incomplete”. No wonderNo wonder, there is an increasing numberthere are increasing number of cars on the road that create problemswhich are creating problems such as traffic jams, air pollution and longer commute timeslonger commuting periods. In the futureIn future, this trend is likely to worsen. The solution, it would seem, is for the governmentfor government to encourage the use of public transport in urban areas, thus reducing dependence on carsdecreasing dependence on the car.
One way to encourage the use of public transportstimulate public transport use is to make private car use more expensive and inconvenient. The introduction of tolls along urban motorways has been used successfullyhas been successfully employed in many cities. Other such measures are high-priced permits for parking in urban areas and the restriction of parking to a limited number of cars. Faced with high costs or nowhere to parkhigh costs or no place to park, commuters would perhaps be more willing to abandon their cars in favour of buses or trains.
GovernmentsThe governments could also encourage public transport use. The construction of free car parks at suburban train stations has proven successful in quite a number of countries. This allows commuters to drive part of the way butway, but take public transport into the most congested central urban areasthe central, most congested, urban areas. Indeed, making public transport more comfortable and convenient should help attractshould work to attract more commuters and decrease traffic congestion. Public transport that is convenient and comfortable retains its passengers, much like any business that satisfies its customers. The more commuters committed to taking public transport, the less congestion on city streets.
To put it in a nutshell, I pen down saying that the increasing number of cars is creating problems like pollution, accidents and traffic congestion but steps could be taken to minimize the problems.
Why this response received Band 7.0
The response is strongest in its clear, logically organised explanation of practical ways to reduce reliance on cars, with relevant examples of tolls, parking controls, and improved public transport. Its main limitation is that the problems caused by unrestricted car use are mostly listed rather than developed. The highest-priority improvement is to explain the causes or consequences of two or three problems before presenting the solutions.
IELTS Writing Criteria Scores
Task Response
The response addresses both questions and presents a clear preference for discouraging car use through public-transport incentives and restrictions, but its discussion of the problems is underdeveloped.
Develop each main problem with a brief explanation of its cause or consequence before moving to proposed solutions.
Coherence and Cohesion
Ideas progress logically through an introduction, two focused solution paragraphs, and a conclusion, with generally effective cohesive links.
Make the relationship between the problem discussion and the solution paragraphs more explicit, while reducing repeated references to convenience and congestion.
Lexical Resource
A sufficiently flexible vocabulary conveys transport policy and urban problems precisely, though a few expressions are awkward or formulaic.
Replace stock phrases such as the concluding formula with direct academic wording and refine collocations around government action and car numbers.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy
A range of complex sentence structures is used with good control, and the occasional article or agreement error does not impede meaning.
Proofread singular-plural agreement and article use, especially in phrases referring to the number of cars and government responsibility.
