The diagrams below show the life cycle of the silkworm and the stages in the production of silk cloth.

Process diagram for an IELTS Academic Task 1 question about Silkworm Life Cycle and Silk Production.

Sample Response

The yielded process charts illustrate the silkworm life cycle and the stages of cloth production.

Overall, it can be clearly seen that this is a cyclonic process and have four different stages, which start with eggs and end with a moth.

In the first stage, the silkworm is eggs, and the female moth gives birth on a leaf which took 10 days to silkworm larva. In the following stage, this silkworm larva main source of food is a mulberry leaf. In the third stage, silkworm larva needs to 4 to 6 weeks approximately for silk threads. The side of the silk thread is known as a larva which requires 3 to 6 days for the next stage.

In the final stage, the cocoon needs 3 to 6 days for becoming silk thread. In subsequently, 16 days are required for growing up, and it becomes a moth. This is a life cycle or cyclonic process; thus, some period later moth put eggs and later process is same.

IELTS Writing Correction

  • 1. Wrong word choice Original: yielded Suggested revision: given Why it matters: Yielded does not mean presented or supplied in this context.
  • 2. Specify the material Original: cloth production Suggested revision: silk cloth production Why it matters: Naming silk makes the introductory description match the task precisely.
  • 3. Use process term Original: cyclonic Suggested revision: cyclical Why it matters: Cyclonic relates to cyclones, whereas cyclical describes a repeating process.
  • 4. Fix agreement Original: have Suggested revision: has Why it matters: The singular subject process requires the verb has.
  • 5. Show the cycle Original: start with eggs and end with a moth Suggested revision: run from eggs to a moth before repeating Why it matters: The diagram is cyclical, so presenting the moth as a final endpoint is misleading.
  • 6. Correct the stage Original: the silkworm is eggs Suggested revision: the cycle begins with eggs Why it matters: A silkworm cannot grammatically or logically be described as eggs.
  • 7. Use accurate verb Original: female moth gives birth on a leaf Suggested revision: female moth lays eggs on a leaf Why it matters: Lays eggs accurately describes the first stage shown in the diagram.
  • 8. Fix stage transition Original: which took 10 days to silkworm larva Suggested revision: which hatch into silkworm larvae after 10 days Why it matters: The revision supplies the correct verb, plural noun, and time construction.
  • 9. Add possessive form Original: this silkworm larva main source Suggested revision: the silkworm larva's main source Why it matters: The possessive form is required to show that the food source belongs to the larva.
  • 10. Use the plural Original: is a mulberry leaf Suggested revision: is mulberry leaves Why it matters: The diagram represents mulberry leaves as the larva's general food rather than one particular leaf.
  • 11. Repair stage description Original: silkworm larva needs to 4 to 6 weeks approximately for silk threads Suggested revision: the silkworm larva feeds on mulberry leaves for approximately 4 to 6 weeks Why it matters: The revision corrects the verb pattern and states the timed feeding stage accurately.
  • 12. Correct sequencing Original: final Suggested revision: next Why it matters: Cocoon formation is followed by a further development stage, so it is not yet final.

Overall assessment

Why this response received Band 5.0

The response identifies the cyclical nature of the silkworm's life and follows its broad sequence, which gives the reader a basic framework. However, it omits the silk-cloth production process requested in the task and contains confused stage descriptions and inaccurate timings, including 3–6 rather than 3–8 days. The priority is to cover both processes fully, verify every transition, and rewrite unclear sentences in accurate grammatical English.

Band score breakdown

IELTS Writing Criteria Scores

TA

Task Achievement

4.5
Scoring rule

A basic lifecycle overview is given, but the cloth-production process is entirely omitted and several stages and durations are reported inaccurately.

Next step

Describe both diagrams and report the sequence precisely: eggs hatch after 10 days, larvae feed for 4–6 weeks, cocoons form after 3–8 days, and moths emerge after 16 days.

CC

Coherence and Cohesion

5.0
Scoring rule

The response broadly follows the lifecycle order, but repetition, unclear referencing, and awkward linking frequently disrupt progression.

Next step

Organise each process in a separate paragraph and use simple chronological links that clearly identify the subject of every stage.

LR

Lexical Resource

5.0
Scoring rule

Some relevant process vocabulary is attempted, but inaccurate choices and collocations such as "cyclonic process" and "gives birth on a leaf" reduce precision.

Next step

Use established process terms such as "cyclical," "lays eggs," "hatches into larvae," and "forms a cocoon."

GRA

Grammatical Range and Accuracy

4.5
Scoring rule

Frequent errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction sometimes make the intended relationships difficult to understand.

Next step

Build each stage with a clear subject and finite verb, then check tense and subject–verb agreement sentence by sentence.
