Overall, immigration figures were consistently higher than emigration figures throughout the period. Both immigration and emigration showed an upward trend, while net migration fluctuated and reached two distinct peaks in 2004 and 2007.
In detail, the number of people immigrating to the UK increased overallrose steadily from 450,000 in 1999 to nearly 600,000 in 2004, after which it remained close to this level despite some minor fluctuations. Emigration, by contrast, increased more gradually, climbing from around 300,000 to approximately 400,000 by 2006, before falling slightly in 2007 and then rising again to around 425,000420,000 in 2008.
Net migration, which is calculated as immigration minus emigration, stood at around 150,000 between 1999 and 2003.
