Band 8.0 IELTS General Training Writing Task 1 Correction

You have recently migrated to another country. Now write a letter to your friend to describe your present life. In your letter, say: when you have moved to this country why you chose this country how things are now for you

Sample Response

Dear Kumar, Hope you are doing fine. I'm so happy that you have finally decided to migrate to Canada, and I would say that it is a timely decision considering your career and children's education. As you know I have migrated to Ontario, Canada last January and we are doing fine. It was a big decision to migrate to another country but I am delighted that we have finally settled in. It's been almost four months, and we already feel at home. The different weather was perhaps the hardest part to adapt to but we are doing excellent. As you know, Canada has one of the highest immigration rates due to better job opportunities, cultural diversity, economic strength, and people's tolerance to immigrants. On top of that, the superior education this country offers is unparalleled. Canada’s affordable education system has contributed to its appeal to immigrants and I primarily considered my daughter's education before deciding to migrate to another country. I have managed a job in an accounting firm and the pay scale is really lucrative. We have rented a house near Ria's school and it's around 30 minutes drive away from my office. Canadians are very nice people, especially Ontarians and I have already made a few friends. Home to Niagara Falls, Ontario is full of things to do and we are so amazed to explore new places each week. You can never get bored of living here since there's much variety in everything. We have plenty of options to occupy our time. I would love to hear from you. Please do write back to me. Warm wishes, Ashim

IELTS Writing Correction

  • 1. Focus prompt Original: you have finally decided to migrate to Canada Suggested revision: you asked how life in Canada is going Why it matters: The task asks the writer to describe present life, so the opening can connect more directly to that purpose.
  • 2. Intro comma Original: As you know I have migrated Suggested revision: As you know, I migrated Why it matters: Add a comma after the introductory phrase and use past simple with “last January”.
  • 3. Adverb needed Original: doing excellent Suggested revision: doing very well Why it matters: “Well” is the natural adverb after “doing”.
  • 4. Comma before but Original: to adapt to but we are Suggested revision: to adapt to, but we are Why it matters: Use a comma before “but” when it joins two clauses.
  • 5. Natural collocation Original: people's tolerance to immigrants Suggested revision: people’s tolerance of immigrants Why it matters: “Tolerance of” is the usual collocation.
  • 6. Wrong collocation Original: I have managed a job Suggested revision: I have found a job Why it matters: You “find” or “get” a job; you do not usually “manage” a job.
  • 7. Possessive time phrase Original: 30 minutes drive Suggested revision: a 30-minute drive Why it matters: Use a compound adjective before “drive”.
  • 8. Separate clauses Original: Canadians are very nice people, especially Ontarians and I have already made Suggested revision: Canadians are very nice people, especially Ontarians, and I have already made Why it matters: The added comma closes the inserted phrase and clarifies the sentence.
  • 9. Formal link Original: On top of that Suggested revision: Another reason was that Why it matters: This link makes the reason for choosing Canada more explicit.
  • 10. Less absolute Original: superior education Suggested revision: high-quality education Why it matters: This is a more natural and less exaggerated phrase.
  • 11. Natural close Original: Please do write back to me. Suggested revision: Please write back when you have time. Why it matters: The revised closing sounds friendly and natural.
  • 12. Sentence rewrite Original: As you know I have migrated to Ontario, Canada last January and we are doing fine. Suggested revision: As you know, I migrated to Ontario, Canada, last January, and we are doing very well. Why it matters: This fixes punctuation, tense, and the adjective/adverb problem.

IELTS Writing Criteria Scores

Detailed feedback by IELTS writing criterion after the annotated essay.

TA

Task Achievement

8.0
Feedback

The letter gives a clear, friendly update about moving to Canada, the reasons for choosing it, and current life there. It also addresses the friend personally, although the opening focus on the friend’s own migration slightly distracts from the requested description of the writer’s present life.

Next step

Start more directly with your own move, then use the friend’s plans as a brief conversational link.

CC

Coherence and Cohesion

8.0
Feedback

Ideas are logically ordered and the letter develops each bullet with useful detail. The response is one long block, so paragraphing is the main weakness despite generally smooth progression.

Next step

Use separate paragraphs for the date of the move, reasons for choosing Canada, and current work, home, and social life.

LR

Lexical Resource

8.0
Feedback

The vocabulary is flexible and topic-appropriate, with phrases such as “cultural diversity”, “economic strength”, and “lucrative”. A few phrases are unnatural or overstated, including “managed a job” and “doing excellent”.

Next step

Keep the range, but replace unnatural collocations with idiomatic phrases such as “found a job” and “doing very well”.

GRA

Grammatical Range and Accuracy

7.5
Feedback

There is a strong range of sentence structures and mostly accurate grammar. Minor errors occur in tense, missing commas, and noun phrases such as “30 minutes drive”.

Next step

Check present perfect with past time markers and add commas after introductory clauses.
