Sample Response

In contemporary society, the income disparity between celebrities and politicians has reached appreciable proportions. This essay delves into the underlying factors behind this phenomenon and presents a perspective on whether it is a positive or negative development.

There are a host of reasons contributing to the significant income gap between celebrities and politicians. Notably, celebrities often derive their income not only from their primary profession but also from lucrative endorsement deals with corporate giants. Take, for instance, Cristiano Ronaldo, an iconic footballer whose earnings extend beyond the pitch. In addition to his salary as a player, he amasses substantial wealth through sponsorship agreements with major brands like Adidas, where he promotes their products on his social media platforms such as Instagram and Twitter. Even less well-known celebrities could also generate multiple sources of income in a similar fashion. This diversification of income streams is a primary driver of celebrities' superior earnings when compared to politicians, who predominantly rely on fixed salaries and are constrained by their roles in the political arena, which seldom intersect with the commercial world.

From my perspective, while the growth in income for celebrities means better living standards for such individuals, the lopsided income distribution has the potential to yield adverse effects on a societal level. Chief among these is that the disproportionate gap between the salaries of politicians and celebrities might drive an increasing number of people, especially young ones, towards the entertainment industry rather than politics as well as other fields. This can be seen in Vietnam where many young adults, especially those in Generation Z, attempt to become influencers on popular social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram due to the high stream of income. This might contribute to the imbalance in the job market. More worryingly, a society that excessively rewards fame and fortune over public service and leadership may prioritize materialistic values over qualities such as integrity, empathy, and altruism. This shift in values can have detrimental effects on societal cohesion.

In conclusion, the substantial income gap between celebrities and politicians arises from the diverse revenue streams available to celebrities and the constraints of a political career. This phenomenon could pose serious challenges to the job market and the development of society.

IELTS Writing Correction

  • 1. Use natural emphasis Original: appreciable Suggested revision: substantial Why it matters: 'Substantial proportions' is the more natural collocation for describing a large disparity.
  • 2. Remove redundancy Original: underlying factors behind Suggested revision: factors behind Why it matters: Both 'underlying' and 'behind' express the same relationship.
  • 3. Simplify the structure Original: There are a host of reasons contributing to Suggested revision: Several factors contribute to Why it matters: The revision avoids the awkward agreement and participial construction in the original phrase.
  • 4. Use formal wording Original: corporate giants Suggested revision: large corporations Why it matters: 'Corporate giants' is journalistic wording, while 'large corporations' is more precise in an academic essay.
  • 5. Fix relative reference Original: where he promotes their products Suggested revision: whose products he promotes Why it matters: 'Where' refers to a place, whereas the relative clause needs to show possession by Adidas.
  • 6. Use consistent modality Original: could Suggested revision: can Why it matters: The paragraph describes a general present-day ability, so 'can' is more appropriate than hypothetical 'could.'
  • 7. Use precise comparison Original: superior Suggested revision: higher Why it matters: 'Higher' directly compares income levels, while 'superior' can imply quality rather than amount.
  • 8. Avoid unsupported trend Original: the growth in income for celebrities Suggested revision: high incomes among celebrities Why it matters: 'Growth' introduces a change over time that the essay has not established.
  • 9. Use appropriate noun Original: ones Suggested revision: people Why it matters: 'Young ones' is too informal and imprecise for this context.
  • 10. Fix the comparison Original: rather than politics as well as other fields Suggested revision: rather than politics or other fields Why it matters: 'Rather than' requires a clear alternative, so 'or' correctly coordinates the two rejected options.
  • 11. Use natural collocation Original: the high stream of income Suggested revision: the high earning potential Why it matters: Income is not naturally described as a 'high stream' in this context.

Overall assessment

Why this response received Band 8.0

The response fully answers both questions through a clear explanation of the earnings gap and a consistently negative evaluation, supported by relevant examples and logically sequenced reasoning. Its main limitation is occasional imprecision or overstatement in otherwise flexible vocabulary, while the explanation of why celebrity income is higher could draw on a slightly broader range of causes. Refine collocations and diversify the causal analysis to make an already strong argument more precise.
