Some people prefer activities and lifestyles in hot climates while others prefer living in cold climates. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Sample Response
Nowadays, the climate is always an important reason for choosing the right place. Some people like hot conditions for sports while others believe that you can gain maximum benefits in a cold atmosphere. Firstly, I will cover the reasons for liking summer and later will explore the merits of winter on lifestyle preferences.
Some people claim that living in a warmer climate has many benefits. Firstly, they can travel easily anywhere and take a picnic with the family. For example, people go to beaches in the summer because they have to spend time with family and this climate makes everyone energetic. Furthermore, the citizens who live in hot countries have fewer concerns about clothing, while in colder areas, they have to wear multiple clothes to protect their bodies.
On the other hand, a cold climate also has its own advantages. First of all, some crops grow only in the winter, and prices also decrease. Secondly, people are more active and fit to do daily activities. For instance, the inhabitants who live in cold regions prefer to do morning work, yoga, and exercise to keep their bodies physically fit. Moreover, people in cold areas have fewer health problems because there are fewer chances of dehydration compared to hot months.
In conclusion, there are many benefits associated with both cold and warm environments. So, living in a hot or cold climate is an individual choice. However, in my personal opinion, staying in cold weather is better than a hot climate because I believe cold weather makes me fresh and active. Cold regions are suitable for people who want to avoid certain diseases and enjoy their special hobbies.
IELTS Writing Correction
- 1. Use precise noun Original: the climate is always an important reason Suggested revision: climate is an important factor Why it matters: Climate is a factor in a choice rather than a reason for choosing by itself.
- 2. Use precise adjective Original: the right place Suggested revision: a suitable place Why it matters: “Suitable” expresses appropriateness more precisely in formal writing.
- 3. Use natural term Original: hot conditions Suggested revision: warm climates Why it matters: “Warm climates” is a more natural term for places with persistently high temperatures.
- 4. Fix awkward collocation Original: gain maximum benefits in a cold atmosphere Suggested revision: benefit most from a cold climate Why it matters: The revision uses natural collocations for receiving advantages from a climate.
- 5. Restore shared subject Original: and later will explore Suggested revision: and will later explore Why it matters: The auxiliary must precede the adverb when the subject is shared with the first clause.
- 6. Clarify relationship Original: merits of winter on lifestyle preferences Suggested revision: benefits of winter for different lifestyles Why it matters: The original preposition creates an unclear relationship between winter and lifestyle.
- 7. Improve word order Original: travel easily anywhere Suggested revision: travel anywhere easily Why it matters: This ordering places the destination phrase naturally before the manner adverb.
- 8. Fix collocation Original: take Suggested revision: have Why it matters: English uses “have a picnic,” not “take a picnic.”
- 9. Express opportunity clearly Original: because they have to spend time with family Suggested revision: because they can spend time with their families Why it matters: “Can” expresses the stated benefit, while plural “families” agrees with the general plural subject.
- 10. Avoid absolute wording Original: this climate makes everyone energetic Suggested revision: warm weather makes people feel energetic Why it matters: The revision uses a natural expression and avoids the unsupported absolute “everyone.”
- 11. Use concise reference Original: the citizens who live in hot countries Suggested revision: people who live in hot countries Why it matters: “People” is sufficient because legal citizenship is irrelevant to the comparison.
- 12. Fix clothing phrase Original: multiple clothes Suggested revision: several layers of clothing Why it matters: “Layers of clothing” is the natural expression for garments worn together for warmth.

Why this response received Band 6.5
The response’s strongest feature is its straightforward structure: both climate preferences are discussed and a clear personal choice is maintained in the conclusion. The main limitation is that several supporting claims are broad, questionable, or only briefly explained, while awkward collocations weaken precision. The highest-priority improvement is to develop fewer, more convincing advantages through explicit cause-and-effect reasoning and more natural vocabulary.
IELTS Writing Criteria Scores
Task Response
Both views are addressed and the writer’s preference is clear, but several advantages are generalized or insufficiently developed.
Support each view with more convincing explanations that clearly show how the climate produces the claimed benefit.
Coherence and Cohesion
The four-paragraph organisation is logical and easy to follow, though progression relies heavily on mechanical sequencing devices.
Create smoother links between claims and explanations instead of repeatedly introducing points with list-style connectors.
Lexical Resource
The response uses an adequate topic-related range, but inaccurate collocations such as “take a picnic” and “morning work” are noticeable.
Choose more natural collocations and precise terms when describing activities, clothing, health, and weather.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy
Simple and complex structures are mixed with generally clear meaning, although article, pronoun, and phrasing errors recur.
Review article use, comparison structures, and sentence boundaries to improve accuracy across longer sentences.
