International tourism has brought enormous benefit to many places. At the same time there is concern about it's impaction on local inhabitants and the environment. Do the disadvantapes of international tourism outweight the advantapes? In my opinion advantapes outweight the disadvantapes. Firstly, many countries like Egypt or Tailond live from tourism. Lots of people work there as a seilomens or tourist guides. These countries without support of tourists wouldn't be able to function properly. Secondly, in countries visited by tourists are plenty of places where people just can't pass because of rare animals or pleuts. Another thing is that people like traveling and seeing new exotic places. They like lie on the beach or swim in ocean. Furthermore, tourism is now more growing industry highering tousands of people. There are makeing new places to work and to have fun. But on the other hand, people often forget that they aren't the only beings on the plenet. Many tourists are living garbage just anywhere. Some of them want an exotic suvenir so they pay for illegal things like dead or live animals or some sculpure. To sum up I think international traveling is a good thing but people must realise that there is something else besides them. They need to know that flora and fauna needs to be protected. People have to enjoy their holidays but alsow protect environment.

The first five lines of this response are directly copied rubric; no credit is given for copied rubric. The topic is addressed and a relevant position is expressed, although there are patches (as in the fourth paragraph) where the development is unclear. Other ideas are more evidently relevant, but are sometimes insufficiently developed. In spite of this, ideas are clearly organised and there is an overall progression within the response. There is some effective use of a range of cohesive devices, including referencing, but there is also some mechanical use of linkers in places. Paragraphs are sometimes rather too short and inappropriate. A range of vocabulary is attempted and this is adequate for a good response to the task. However, control is weak and there are frequent spelling errors that can cause some difficulties for the reader, thus keeping the rating down for the lexical criterion. The test taker uses a mix of simple and complex structures with frequent subordinate clauses. Control of complex structures is variable, and although errors are noticeable they only rarely impede communication. Although there are some features of a higher band in this response, flaws in the paragraphing and the errors in vocabulary limit this rating to Band 5.5.

'Tourism' - friend or foe? Tourism is a very big industry in the modern time and is growing quite rapidly. Thousands of people travel everywhere to various destinations every year. Arguments have come up regarding the benefits and negative impacts of tourism on places and on its local inhabitants and environment; however, I believe there are more advantages than disadvantages of international tourism. People travel for various reasons; we travel for business purpose, holidays, visit friends and relatives etc. Travelling is mostly seen as a recreational activity. Tourism has many advantages. Tourism can play a tremendous part in a countrys economy, the more tourists visit a country and spend money there the better it is for the country; that way more money is circulated within the country and even the stability of their currency rate of exchange persists if not improve. Vendors and shops get to sell more goods and make an income. Tourism also has its non-monetary advantages; it brings cultures and people closer. People from all around the world get to share their culture with each other and even learn more. This is a good opportunity in education. Tourism seems to have some disadvantages too; However, I believe the problems caused by tourism are not something that cannot be solved or prevented. A lot of people believe that tourism can destroy or deviate culture and cause quite an impact on visited locations such as pollution and littering. People can adhere to their own beliefs and way of life if they want to; no one can really forcefully influence someone to change from their morals and ethics Pollution can be avoided by increasing usage of environmental friendly vehicles used for tours and rents, warnings and visual education on littering and smoking, Specific times can be allocated for tours to certain areas, such as peak times where local inhabitants feel uncomfortable due to too many foreigners. Where there are problems there can always be solutions. Tourism brings great amount of advantages for any place in many ways and is a 'win-win' exchange process. The very few problems caused can always be avoided or taken care of. I believe tourism should be highly promoted, specially in traditional and poor countries with natural beauty such as Bangladesh.

The test taker addresses both aspects of the task and presents a clear position throughout the response. Ideas are relevant, well extended and supported, although there are occasional lapses in content (as in the opening of paragraph 2 and the tendency to ‘present solutions to the disadvantages’ in paragraph 3). However, ideas are logically organised and there is a clear progression. A range of cohesive devices is used effectively, but some under-use of connectives and substitution and some lapses in the use of referencing are noticeable. A wide range of vocabulary is used flexibly. The test taker can convey precise meanings, and although awkward expressions or inappropriacies in word choice occur, these are only occasional and do not limit the rating for this criterion. Likewise, a good range of sentence structures is used with a high level of accuracy resulting in frequent error-free sentences. Minor systematic errors persist, however, and punctuation is unhelpful at times. The strength of the appropriate response to the task, and the lexical resource in particular, mean overall this response is a good example of Band 7.5.

5th. March 1996 Dear Sir / Madam, I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with my room-mate. As you know we share one room, I can not study in the room at all any more if I still stay there. She always has friend visiting and has parties in the room. They make lots of noise and switch on the radio very loudly, for me this environment is very difficult to study and I need a quiet room. Even borrows my things without asking, it is very impolite. I request you can give me a new room next term because I have been asked her has parties in other place many times they still have parties in the room. I really can not stay in the same room with her. I would be grateful if you could change me a single room. Your faithfully, Catherine.

This response does address the requirements of the task and appears in a letter format. The second bullet point is well covered, with multiple ‘problems’ presented. However, overall there is some repetition of the task rubric, and there is room for more detail to be included, for example, coverage of the third bullet point. The organisation of ideas is not wholly logical and points are not always linked together well. Despite these problems, the introduction to the letter is appropriate and the purpose of the writer is clear. There is a range of vocabulary which is generally adequate and appropriate for the task. Complex structures are attempted but, overall, sentences are kept quite simple, grammatical errors are frequent and they do cause some difficulty for the reader.

My main problem is that I cannot study in my room because my room-mate always has friends visiting. He also has parties, which usually ends early in the morning, several times a week. Furthermore he often borrows my things without asking me. I cannot accept this situation any longer. Especially because I have very imporant exams next term and I really must study hard. This is why I would be very grateful if I could have another room next term. It would be most convenient for me if I haden't to share my room with somebody else. I am looking forward to hear from you soon. yours faithfully, Anja Schweizer

The content of the letter is relevant to the task. The first two bullet points are covered in detail, with several ‘problems’ given; the third bullet point could be more fully illustrated, with details of what kind of accommodation (not just a single room). The information in the letter is logically organised and the appropriate use of linking devices means that it reads quite fluently. Vocabulary is used well, spelling is accurate and there are some less common words and expressions [borrows | having to share]. There is evidence of more complex sentence structures but also some grammatical errors, although these do not affect the reader greatly.

With some effort, the reader can discern ideas related to two of the bullet points but the first bullet is not covered. There is a definite attempt to address the task but the purpose of the letter is not clear and there is repetition of the minimal ideas produced. The ideas in the response are not organised in any logical way and, although linkers are present, they are not always used correctly and fail to help the reader follow the message. The lexical resource is inadequate for the task. Errors in word choice and spelling do impede meaning; some words cannot be deciphered. There is an attempt to produce sentences but this is often unsuccessful. Overall, errors predominate and there are no correct sentences, other than those that rely on the input material. This is a good example of a Band 3 performance.

Dear Sir or Madam, I'm going to suggest some of my ideas about our local library Fist of all I would like to have a bigger parking space so that it will be more easyer for those who use the library This parking space can be done undernet the library which it will be provided with a lift. I think that this is the main problem for those who came to the library because everyone talkes about it and argue for the time wasthing to park the car around so by means of this idea the main problem can be solved. Another thing that I want to see to be ganged is to give the place a new look because it has been like this for at least 25 years. I would suggest to make a new referbisment like painting, carpentry work and more natural light espacially inside by means of big windows and sky lights. I even suggest that there can also be a small lift because elder people con take advantage of this too. In conclution the costomer care section must be prepared also to help people finding books more quicker and give them some advice as well so that this local public library will be more efficent to all kind of people

This is a good attempt at addressing the task but unfortunately the first bullet point is completely omitted and the letter format is incomplete, as there is no ‘closing’ (e.g. Best wishes, Yours Faithfully). These errors reduce the rating for Task Achievement. The other bullet points are highlighted and well covered. The response has quite a natural, clear progression, although paragraphing would assist this. There is a good range of cohesive devices that have been used appropriately and some good examples of referencing. Despite the range and effective use of lexis, there are noticeable spelling errors, but they only rarely impede communication. Sentence types are mixed and there are many attempts at complex structures, but control is uneven and there are punctuation errors. Although the response shows some features of higher-level performance, the omission of bullet point one and the incomplete letter closing limit the overall rating.

These material Should be Placed and Organise im a Scientific manner So thet most of the people Can be benefited im the Same time. Im your library I liked the numbers of books you have. It almost Covers the major part of the requirment of People but the availability of the books at the right Place and time is the biggest Concern. In library Seating arrangements are very good too. The opening and Closing Timing realy Suits the People. But, the Situation is not at its best. You dor not have the facolity of Electronic material which you normally finds now a days. As I said the Placement of books must be given attention. I have also faced Problems when wanted to take away the books. you Should relax the Problem in this Procedure. Library Should be Calm and Safe. All the books Should be arranged as Per Catalog. This Sequential arrangement will not only ease the Pressure on Staff but also reduce the Complaints. More Electronic equipments Should indulg im the library facilities and matter available im the Shelves. Thanking you for your efforts to improve the Services for the better mant of the people im the locality.

The test taker covers the task requirements and the content of the letter is relevant. The format of the letter is incomplete as there is no ‘closing’ (e.g. Yours Faithfully, Best wishes), this impacts Task Achievement. All bullet points are covered and the purpose is clearly presented. The tone, though assertive, is consistently polite. There is a clear overall progression, but the arrangement of ideas within paragraphs at times detracts from the clarity of the letter. At other times, the sentences are not as fluently linked as they might be. There is a good range of vocabulary that is more than adequate. Although there are errors in collocation and word choice, there are also many examples of accurate choice and appropriate modification. A mix of simple and complex structures is used, but mistakes in punctuation and in areas such as article use and subject-verb agreements, limit the rating for this criterion. This response shows some features of higher-level performance, but weaknesses in format, organisation and grammatical control limit the overall rating to Band 6.

Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing this letter to express my opinion about library services and send some suggestions to improve your operation. I have been using your library services for 25 years and even my son has started to use it as well. I really enjoy of your personel staff and the way they serve the library users. They are always polite, friendly and easy find what you want to. The library is equipped with the comfortable furniture which helps user to feel freely and work efficient. You also have the reading room with the daily newspapers, magazines and other informatic resources. I really appreciate all above-mentioned things in your library. But, I have some concerns I would like to share with you. The thing is I can not find anymore the recent edition books or books of authors of the current century. Of course, I understand we can always find them in the bookstores or in Internet. But everybody will agree with me that there is a great pleasure to read a book alive than in computer or others.resources. So, it would be nice if you check with your management to update it. And plus, I know, it would be costly but may be saving your time, to buy a computer and load a data base of your collection of books. We live and work in the 21st of century. That is all I would like to share with you. Yours faithfully,

This is a strong response, presented in an appropriate letter format. All bullet points are clearly presented and illustrated. The presentation of information is clear throughout and cohesive devices, referencing and substitution are flexibly used, with occasional error, although the absence of effective paragraphing prevents the award of the highest ratings for this criterion. Vocabulary is also used with some flexibility and there is a good range, with evidence that the test taker can use less common expressions and has an awareness of collocation. There is occasional error in word form and choice. Although a variety of structures is apparent, with a mix of simple and complex sentences, the level and regularity of errors in articles, prepositions and some verb phrases limit the rating for this criterion. The density of grammatical error prevents this response from fully satisfying the descriptors of the higher band.

who should be responsible for our People. It's true that the old Peoples situation gets worse in the many countries. The first question must be what they wants and what they needs?. Especially their necessity are more benefit more respect more quiet life. If they have been working for a long time, in the any company or in the Public sector, and when they get old that's means during their retiring retire's time, company or Goverment must be responsible of their welfare, it's just my opinion. They should take care of them. In addition to company or Goverment. If they have good money they can look after theirselves, we can do something to make easier their life. for example an organization, or a voluntary association, unions. The families or Relatives's responsibility depends on their wealthy situations. If they could do, they should do anything. Goverments or their former place could supply them with life insurence and a good Social Security policy. The Social community center or old age Pensioner like in the Britain, are very useful for them. For All of them life is hard and gets harder in the their old ages. They expect more attention for and good life. The old People, if don't want lost them we should do anything that what we're able to do. İ. BOZYİL P. Bozyil

There are quite a lot of relevant ideas in the answer but they are not always well developed and sometimes they are unclear. There are some areas in the answer where the organisation becomes weak and the reader finds the message difficult to follow. Linked to this, paragraphing is not very helpful in terms of grouping ideas around a central topic. Nevertheless, the writer’s view is apparent and there is a logical flow to the points given. Although there is some appropriate vocabulary, there are a lot of errors throughout. There are some complex structures used but, overall, sentence control is very weak and this makes some parts, such as the conclusion, very hard to follow. Note: the corrections made by the test taker in this hand-written response make it difficult to read. It is better to cross out an error and rewrite the word so that the final response is clear.

Who should be responsible for our old people? One of the most challeging problems of today's society is the question who should be responsible for our old people. It's not only a financial problem but also a question of the system we want our society to have. In my essay I would like to four different models Firstly, the company can be responsible for their retired employees. For this reason a special fund could be established. The advantage of this model is, if you belief in the capitalist system, that it should be the cheapest solution. A possible problem is that the companies might have competition disadvantage due to higher staff costs. A second solution is that the goveunment has to take the responsibilitiy for the old people's care. It can finance this with its tax incomes. Actually, this is the most democratic model since everybody gets as much money as he or she needs. Unfortunately, as the persent situation in our country shows, this solution seems not to work very well. The govermneent can no longer afford supporting all the old peoples. Another way of solving this problem is to give back the responsibilitiy to the individual. That means that everybody has to save money during their working life for the time after their retirement. This seems to be not a very fair model because their will certainly exist people who can't afford to save part of their salary. In this case the govermument would have to care for them. A last solution is to go back to the old model of the "big family" who cares for all their members. I don't think this is possible in our days society because the family structures have so much changed. To sum up I have to admitt that I can't find a really good solution for this problem. All models have advantges and disadvantage. Certainly we have to think about this topic much more in the future

This is a very well-organised response which analyses the topic from four different angles and fully answers the question. The ideas are relevant and well supported. The answer is easy to read. There are some inaccuracies in word choice but they have minimal impact on the reader. There are also occasional errors in spelling and grammatical structure, which prevent the awarding of the highest band scores.
