The line graph compares birth rates among women in six different age groups in the UK between 1973 and 2008.

Overall, women aged 25–29 had the highest birth rate throughout the period, while those aged 40 and over had the lowest. Rates rose among women aged 30–35 and 35–39, whereas the other four groups showed overall decreases.

In 1973, the birth rate among women aged 25–29 stood at approximately 140 births per 1,000 people, followed by around 125 for the 20–25 age group. The figures for women aged 30–35 and those under 20 were lower, at about 70 and 60 respectively. Women aged 35–39 had a rate of roughly 40, while the figure for those aged 40 and over stood at just 20 per 1,000.figure for those aged 40 and over was just 20.

Over the following 35 years, the rates for women aged 30–35 and 35–39 increased to approximately 85 and 65 respectively, with the latter overtaking the under-20 group between 1988 and 1993around 1993. By contrast, the figures for women aged 20–25, under 20, and 40 and over fell to about 95, 40, and 1240 and 12 respectively.
