It is noticeable that over-grazing was the main cause ofbiggest reason of worldwide land degradation, while deforestation and over-cultivation constituted slightly smaller proportionsmoderately smaller shares. During the 1990s, 35% of land degradation throughout the world was caused by over-grazing. Specifically, it led to 11.3% of the land in Oceania being degraded, followed by 5.5% of the land in Europe and 1.5% in North America. The second largest contributor to this global phenomenon was deforestation, making up 30%, which degraded 9.8% of European land, 1.7% of land in Oceania, and 0.2% of land in North America.
Meanwhile, over-cultivation was to blame for 28% of worldwide land degradation, compared with other reasons accounting for 7% in total. In terms of its regional impact, over-cultivation degraded 7.7% of total land in Europeover-cultivation made up 7.7% of degraded land in Europe and 3.3% in North America, while it had no effect on Oceania (0%). In total, Europe experienced the highest proportionOverall, Europe had the most severe rate of land degradation in the 1990s (23% total land degraded), while Oceania and North America suffered less, atthe figures of which were 13% and 5% respectively.
