The diagramflow chart delineates the process of disposing of household waste using a modern landfill. Overall, the process consists of three stages: construction, use, anduse and closure. This system is designed to collect liquid from rubbish and trap gases produced by decomposing waste, preventing contamination of the natural rock below.
Initially, a man-made hole is dug into natural rock. The hole is lined first with clay and then a synthetic liningbarrier. Drainage pipes connected to a drainage tank are laid at the base of this lining to collect waste liquid.
Once the landfill is ready, household waste is delivered by trucks and deposited into the pitdumped into the hole. Liquid leaking from the waste flows through the drainage pipes and is stored in the tank.
In the final closure stage, the filled site is covered with a clay covercap. As the buried waste decomposes, gases are generated. These gases are extracted through a pipe leadingpipes leading out of the landfill. The clay and synthetic layers underneath act as barriers to stop waste liquid from seepingwaste liquid leaking into the surrounding rock.
