The diagram illustrates the three main stages in the construction, operation,operation and closure of a modern landfill that is designed to deal with household waste. Overall, the process consists of building the landfill site, filling it with domestic waste, and finally sealing it after use. A range of mechanismsstructures are used to collect waste liquid and gas and prevent pollution. In the first stage, a man-made hole is dug into natural rock. This hole is lined with clay and a synthetic liningbarrier, and drainage pipes and a drainage tank are installed at the base of the cavitybottom of the hole. Once the construction is complete, the landfill enters its operationaluse phase. Lorries deliver household waste and depositdump it into the hole. Liquid from the waste flows down through the drainage pipes and is stored in the drainage tank. DuringIn the final closure stage, the site is covered with a clay coverlayer of clay. As the waste decomposes, gases are produced. These gases are collected via a pipe and removedpipes and removed from the landfill.
