Sample Response

New factories often bring many benefitsmany good things to a community, such as jobs and greaterincreased prosperity. However, in my opinion, the benefits of having a factory are outweighed by the risks. That is why I oppose the plan to build a factory near my community. I believe that my townthis city would be harmed by a large factory. In particular, a factory would seriously damage local air and water qualitydestroy the quality of the air and water in town. Factories bring smog and pollution. In the long run, pollution will damage the environment and harm people’s healththe environment will be hurt and people’s health will be affected. Having a factory is not worth that riskrise. Of course, more jobs will be created by the factory. Our population will grow. To accommodate more workers, additional housing and shopsmore homes and stores will be needed. Do we really want so much growth so quicklythis much growth, so fast? If our town is going to growis going in growth, I would prefer gradual, well-planned growthslow growth with good planning. I don’t want to see rows of poorlycheaply constructed townhouses. Our quality of life must remain a prioritymust be considered. I believe that this growth will change our city too much. I love my hometown because it is a safe, small town. It is also easy to get around hereeasy to travel here. If we must expand to accommodate new residentshold new citizens, the town’s small-community character will disappearthe small-town feel will be gone. I would miss that greatly. A factory would be beneficial in some respectshelpful in some ways. However, I feel that the risks outweighthe dangers are greater than the benefits. I cannot support a plan to build a factory here, and hope that others feel the same way.

Overall assessment

Why this response received Band 6.5

The response gives a clear opposing position and develops credible concerns about pollution, rapid growth, and loss of community character. Its discussion of the factory's advantages is comparatively brief, while the single-block presentation and several awkward phrases weaken the otherwise logical argument. The highest-priority improvement is to balance the two sides more fully and organize them into distinct paragraphs with more precise wording.
