The chart illustrates the percentages of people in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and HobartBrisbane, Adelaide and Hobart who participatedengaged in three coffee- and tea-related activities over a four-week period.
Overall, visiting caféscafé-going was the leading habit in most of the cities, while fresh coffee was purchased by the smallest share of residents everywhere. Another noticeable feature is that Sydney and Melbourne followed a similar pattern, whereas Adelaide differed from the other cities in terms of the most popular activity.
Sydney and Melbourne can be considered together because the three activities were ranked in the same order in both places. Around 61% of people in Sydney visited a café, compared with approximately 64% in Melbourne. Instant coffee was less common, at about 46% and 48% respectively, while the figures for fresh coffee were lower still, at roughly 44% in Sydney and 42% in Melbourne.
Brisbane and Hobart displayed a broadly comparable pattern, although the figures varied. Café visits accounted for approximately 55% in Brisbane and 63% in Hobart, while instant coffee purchases stood at around 53% and 54%. In both cities, only a minority purchasedbought fresh coffee, with the proportions reaching roughly 34% and 38% respectively. Adelaide, by contrast, was the only city where instant coffee, at about 50%, narrowly exceeded the proportion visiting a café (just under 50%)narrowly exceeded café visits. Fresh coffee was again the least common choice there, at approximately one-third.at approximately one third.
