The widespread availability of streaming services has led some people to question whether traditional theatres and cinemas still have a role. Although online entertainment is undoubtedly more convenient, I believe that these venues remain valuable because they offer a distinct shared experience and support both culture and local economies.
Those who consider them outdated have understandable reasons. With a phone, television or laptop, viewers can choose from enormous libraries of films, plays and concerts whenever they wish. This is generally cheaper than buying tickets, travelling to a venue and paying for refreshments. Online platforms are also especially attractive to people in rural areas, parents with small children and those with limited mobility. In addition, modern home screens and sound systems can provide a highly enjoyable experience without the distractions sometimes found in public venues.
However, watching at home is not entirely equivalent to attending a performance. A live theatre production creates an immediate connection between actors and audience; each show can be slightly different, and spectators react together. Similarly, a cinema's large screen and sound make some films more powerful than they would be on a personal device. These institutions also introduce audiences to independent films, local performers and challenging work that may not be promoted by algorithms designed to maximise viewing time.
Their economic contribution should not be ignored either. Cinemas and theatres employ performers, technicians, ushers and administrators, while nearby restaurants and shops often benefit from visitors before and after events. If such venues disappeared, city centres could become less lively and creative careers would be harder to sustain.
In my view, digital services will reduce the dominance of cinemas and theatres, but they should complement rather than replace them. Public venues need to adapt through comfortable facilities, varied programming and reasonable prices, yet their cultural and social advantages ensure that they will continue to be important.
IELTS Writing Correction
- 1. Use concise wording Original: still have a role Suggested revision: remain relevant Why it matters: This replacement expresses continued importance more directly.
- 2. Clarify the reference Original: Those who consider them outdated Suggested revision: Those who consider these venues outdated Why it matters: Naming the venues removes the slightly vague pronoun reference at the paragraph opening.
- 3. Improve collocation Original: enormous libraries Suggested revision: extensive catalogues Why it matters: “Extensive catalogues” is a more precise formal collocation for collections offered by streaming services.
- 4. Strengthen parallel phrasing Original: people in rural areas, parents with small children and those with limited mobility Suggested revision: rural residents, parents of young children and people with limited mobility Why it matters: The revised list uses more concise and parallel noun phrases.
- 5. Specify both groups Original: between actors and audience Suggested revision: between performers and spectators Why it matters: These terms distinguish the two groups more precisely and maintain balanced phrasing.
- 6. Use precise expression Original: spectators react together Suggested revision: spectators respond collectively Why it matters: “Respond collectively” conveys the shared audience reaction in a more formal register.
- 7. Complete the noun phrase Original: a cinema's large screen and sound Suggested revision: a cinema's large screen and sound system Why it matters: “Sound system” names the cinema feature more precisely than the abstract noun “sound”.
- 8. Choose accurate verb Original: promoted by algorithms Suggested revision: recommended by algorithms Why it matters: Algorithms typically recommend content to viewers, making this verb more exact in context.
- 9. Correct means expression Original: adapt through comfortable facilities Suggested revision: adapt by providing comfortable facilities Why it matters: The “by” phrase clearly expresses how public venues can adapt.
- 10. Sentence rewrite Original: However, watching at home is not entirely equivalent to attending a performance. Suggested revision: Watching at home, however, is not equivalent to attending a live performance. Why it matters: The rewrite sharpens the contrast and specifies the kind of performance being compared.

Why this response received Band 8.0
The response is strongest in its nuanced, fully consistent position and the way cultural, social, and economic arguments are developed with well-chosen detail. The principal limitation is that a few claims, such as the effect of algorithms and venue adaptation, could be analysed more explicitly; the best next step is to extend the causal explanation of these ideas rather than adding further points.
IELTS Writing Criteria Scores
Detailed feedback by IELTS writing criterion after the annotated essay.
Task Response
The response fully discusses both perspectives, sustains a clear opinion, and develops its main arguments with relevant support.
Explain the consequences of the algorithm and adaptation points more fully to make the strongest ideas even more incisive.
Coherence and Cohesion
The argument is logically sequenced, paragraphs have distinct functions, and cohesion is managed smoothly without drawing attention to itself.
Make the transition from cultural value to economic contribution slightly more conceptually explicit for an even tighter argument.
Lexical Resource
A wide, flexible vocabulary conveys precise distinctions through natural expressions such as shared experience, maximise viewing time, and sustain creative careers.
Polish the few less exact combinations, such as adapting through comfortable facilities, to achieve consistently sharper collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy
Varied complex structures, including controlled subordination and punctuation, are used accurately and flexibly across the essay.
Maintain this control while experimenting with still more concise syntactic emphasis in the most important evaluative claims.
