It is true that online services now provide films, concerts and forms of entertainment at a low cost. While this development has reduced the need for people to visit theatres and cinemas, I believe these places still have an important role in society and local economies.
On the one hand, watching entertainment online is more convenient for many people. A person can choose a film at any time, pause it and watch it without travelling or buying an expensive ticket. This is useful for parents, people living far from city centres, or those with limited free time. In addition, streaming platforms offer a wide selection, including programmes from other countries that may never be shown in a local cinema. For these reasons, it is understandable that some people see traditional venues as less necessary than before.
On the other hand, theatres and cinemas offer an experience that cannot be fully copied on a small screen. Seeing a play performed live creates a direct connection between actors and the audience, and people enjoy sharing reactions with others in the same room. Cinemas can also show films with better sound and larger images than homes can provide. Culturally, local theatres support writers, performers and regional stories, which may be ignored by international websites. If such venues disappeared, artists would have fewer opportunities to develop their careers.
They are also economically valuable. A popular performance or film can attract visitors who spend money in restaurants, shops and transport services. Although some cinemas may need to change their business model, for example by offering special events, they can still contribute to the life of a town.
In conclusion, online entertainment is flexible and cheap, so it will continue to grow. However, theatres and cinemas remain worthwhile because they provide shared cultural experiences and support both creative workers and local businesses.
IELTS Writing Correction
- 1. Clarify category relationship Original: films, concerts and forms of entertainment Suggested revision: films, concerts and other forms of entertainment Why it matters: Adding “other” makes the relationship between the examples and the broader category explicit.
- 2. Use concise phrasing Original: at a low cost Suggested revision: at low cost Why it matters: The uncountable form is more concise when referring generally to inexpensive access.
- 3. Use precise reference Original: these places Suggested revision: these venues Why it matters: “Venues” refers more precisely to theatres and cinemas in this context.
- 4. Choose precise verb Original: cannot be fully copied Suggested revision: cannot be fully replicated Why it matters: “Replicated” more accurately describes reproducing an experience in another setting.
- 5. Name the platform Original: international websites Suggested revision: international streaming platforms Why it matters: This phrase identifies the type of online service being contrasted with local theatres.

- 7. Correct preposition pattern Original: in restaurants, shops and transport services Suggested revision: in restaurants and shops and on transport services Why it matters: Money is spent in physical businesses but on services, so the coordinated phrase needs both prepositions.

- 10. Sentence rewrite Original: A person can choose a film at any time, pause it and watch it without travelling or buying an expensive ticket. Suggested revision: A person can choose and watch a film at any time, pause it when necessary, and avoid travelling or buying an expensive ticket. Why it matters: Reordering the actions removes the illogical sequence in which the film appears to be paused before it is watched.
- 11. Sentence rewrite Original: Cinemas can also show films with better sound and larger images than homes can provide. Suggested revision: Cinemas can also provide better sound and larger images than viewers can experience at home. Why it matters: This rewrite creates a logically parallel comparison between the cinema experience and viewing at home.

Why this response received Band 8.0
The response is strongest in its balanced coverage and consistently clear position, supported by relevant cultural and economic reasoning. Its main limitation is that several points remain broadly explained rather than illustrated with especially specific evidence; the highest-priority improvement is to deepen one or two central ideas with more concrete, tightly analysed examples while preserving the concise structure.
