The graph shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport.
Sample Response
The graph illustrates the quantities of goods transporteddifferences of transport fromduring 1974 to 2002 in the UKin UK transport.
It can be noticed that the graph for pipeline remained steady from 1994 to 2002. However, other means of transportation on Roads, Water and Rail ways went up slowly over the same periodin same year.
Goods transported by pipeline in the UKin Pipeline in UK betweenfrom 1974 and 2002 stayed constant at 20 million tonnes from 1994 to 2002during 1994 up to 2002, which started from about about 3 million tonnes in 1974one million tonnes in 1994. Unlike, Road and Water goods transported in those rose to 40 million tonnes. In the beginning 1974, Pipeline increased in 1982 almost 20 million tonnes and still maintained the same level from 1982 to 1990 and between 1990 andto 1994 increased graduallydecreased slowly.
Three goods transport in UK (1974-2002) were Road, Water and Rail showed a rose slowly in 2002. The amount of goods transported by roadGoods transported in Road got higher than Water and Rail. Although, the amount transported by waterwater way good transportation stayed constant at approximately 60 million tonnesapproximately in 60 million tonnes in 1982. The amount transported by roadRoad way transported goods fell slightly to about 70 million tonnesreduced slowly about 70 million tonnes. Pipeline transport followed a different patternPipeline was difference statistics which increased slowly but most still levelled out at nol to twenty million tonnes than others fluctuated from 1975 until 2002.
Why this response received Band 4.0
The response makes a useful attempt to identify broad trends, especially the relatively stable pipeline figures, and it uses separate paragraphs to organize observations. Its main limitation is that many values, dates, and movements are inaccurate or unclear, while rail is scarcely covered and the overview does not capture the dominant trends reliably. Prioritize checking each series against the graph, then write one accurate overview and select a few precise comparisons.
IELTS Writing Criteria Scores
Task Achievement
The response identifies a few broad patterns, but numerous data and trend errors seriously weaken coverage, and rail receives almost no meaningful treatment.
State the overall rise in road, water, and pipeline transport, then support it with accurate start, end, and major fluctuation figures for all four modes.
Coherence and Cohesion
Paragraphing is visible, but progression is weak because observations are repeated, loosely grouped, and often connected with inaccurate linking words.
Organize the details into two clear comparison groups and use linking expressions only where the relationship between figures is logically accurate.
Lexical Resource
The vocabulary covers basic transport and trend language, but frequent word-choice, spelling, and collocation errors make several descriptions difficult to understand.
Use a small set of accurate chart phrases such as rose to, fell to, remained stable, and fluctuated, with correct transport nouns.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy
Frequent errors in sentence structure, articles, prepositions, agreement, and clause formation regularly strain or obscure meaning.
Build complete subject-verb sentences first, then check every time phrase and comparison for correct prepositions and grammatical structure.
