The widespread availability of streaming services has led some people to question whether traditional theatres and cinemas remain relevantstill have a role. Although online entertainment is undoubtedly more convenient, I believe that these venues remain valuable because they offer a distinct shared experience and support both culture and local economies.

2

Those who consider these venues outdatedThose who consider them outdated have understandable reasons. With a phone, television or laptop, viewers can choose from extensive cataloguesenormous libraries of films, plays and concerts whenever they wish. This is generally cheaper than buying tickets, travelling to a venue and paying for refreshments. Online platforms are also especially attractive to rural residents, parents of young children and people with limited mobilitypeople in rural areas, parents with small children and those with limited mobility. In addition, modern home screens and sound systems can provide a highly enjoyable experience without the distractions sometimes found in public venues.

3

However, watching at home is not entirely equivalent to attending a performance. A live theatre production creates an immediate connection between performers and spectatorsbetween actors and audience; each show can be slightly different, and spectators respond collectivelyspectators react together. Similarly, a cinema's large screen and sound systema cinema's large screen and sound make some films more powerful than they would be on a personal device. These institutions also introduce audiences to independent films, local performers and challenging work that may not be recommendedpromoted by algorithms designed to maximise viewing time.

4

Their economic contribution should not be ignored either. Cinemas and theatres employ performers, technicians, ushers and administrators, while nearby restaurants and shops often benefit from visitors before and after events. If such venues disappeared, city centres could become less lively and creative careers would be harder to sustain.

5

In my view, digital services will reduce the dominance of cinemas and theatres, but they should complement rather than replace them. Public venues need to adapt by providing comfortable facilitiesadapt through comfortable facilities, varied programming and reasonable prices, yet their cultural and social advantages ensure that they will continue to be important.

Overall assessment

Why this response received Band 8.0

The response is strongest in its nuanced, fully consistent position and the way cultural, social, and economic arguments are developed with well-chosen detail. The principal limitation is that a few claims, such as the effect of algorithms and venue adaptation, could be analysed more explicitly; the best next step is to extend the causal explanation of these ideas rather than adding further points.
