Why this response received Band 5.0
The response offers relevant reasons both for and against higher petrol prices, and its paragraphing makes the broad line of discussion easy to follow. However, it never gives a clear answer to the agree-or-disagree question, while frequent grammatical and collocational errors weaken precision; the priority is to state and sustain one explicit position, then support it with more fully explained evidence in accurately formed sentences.
IELTS Writing Criteria Scores
Task Response
Relevant advantages, disadvantages, and alternatives are presented, but the required agree-or-disagree position remains unclear and ideas are only partly developed.
State a definite degree of agreement in the introduction and conclusion, and make every body point support that judgment.
Coherence and Cohesion
The response is divided into purposeful paragraphs and has a discernible progression, although linking is mechanical and several run-on sentences blur relationships.
Use clearer sentence boundaries and connect each supporting point explicitly to the paragraph's main claim.
Lexical Resource
There is enough vocabulary to discuss transport and pollution, but repetition and frequent inaccurate word choices or collocations limit control.
Replace awkward phrases with precise forms such as raise petrol prices, reduce petrol use, and provide public transport.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy
Some complex forms are attempted, but frequent errors in clauses, agreement, articles, capitalization, and punctuation reduce accuracy and sometimes strain reading.
Prioritize complete sentence structures with one main clause, controlled subordinate clauses, and accurate subject-verb agreement.
