It is sometimes claimed that primary education places too much emphasis ongives too much attention to formal subjects, such as maths and literacy. I partly agree with this viewbecause, because basic academic skills are necessary, but children also need regular opportunities to play in the classroom.
On the one hand, schools cannot ignore formal learning in the early years. Reading, writing and basicsimple calculations form the foundation for almost every subjectare foundations for almost every subject that pupils will study later. If these skills are not taught systematically, children whose parents have little time or money to support their learningchildren from homes where parents have little time or money to support learning may fall behind their classmates. In addition, a clear lesson structure can help young learners understand what is expected of them and make progress. Therefore, it would be unrealistic to replace formal teaching entirely with games.
However, many primary schools may structure the day too much like secondary schools doorganise the day too much like secondary education. As a result, worksheets and teacher-led lessons can make them feel boredmake them bored, even when the material itself is useful. Play is not simply a break from education. In my opinion, learning and play should be combined rather than treated as opposites. A teacher could use a shop game to teach addition or askaddition, or ask groups to create a short drama after reading a book. Such activities still have educational aims, but they are better suited to the way many children learnmore suitable for the way many children learn. Formal lessons remain important, although primary classrooms should give play a central role if schools want to support both academic achievement and social development.
