It is often argued that primary schools place too much emphasis on formal academic learning. I largely agree with this view, and I believe that play playsserves an essential role in education.

2

It is true that formal learning is necessary. Primary school children have not yet developed systematic knowledge across subjects, meaning that without the intervention of schools, they would struggle to acquire basic literacy or problem-solving skills such as arithmetic, reading, and foreign language acquisitionsuch as arithmetic, reading, and foreign languages. However, this is not to say that formal learning itself is harmful. The problem arises when it becomes the only focus of primary education. Firstly, examinations are the main concern. When teachers assess whether students have mastered key skills, quizzes are often used as the primary tool. With an excessive number of tests, students may memorise facts mechanically instead of developing a genuine understanding. Additionally, to cope with exams, children will spend a large amount of time studying, thus reducing time for rest and recreationreducing relaxation and entertainment. A sustained lack of recreational activitiesChildren lack recreational activities, social interaction and exploration over time, which imposes excessive stress on them and reducesallows them to reduce their motivation to learn, and may even lead tothereby developing psychological problems. Students’ mental well-being is valued as highly as academic performance.

3

Play does not have to be separated from learning; indeed, these two elements can complement each other effectively. To begin with, play-based learning can cultivate children’s creativity and imagination. Given that primary school pupils are naturally energeticBecause primary school pupils are naturally active and can find it difficult to concentrate for long periods, incorporating play into lessons helps sustain their engagement and enables them to absorb core concepts. Furthermore, when children play together, they learn to share, negotiate, and resolve interpersonal disputessmall conflicts. These social skills are as important as reading and writing for their future development. FinallyLast but not least, play is inherently engaging, soplaying is obviously so interesting that it can alleviate boredom and stress, and improve motivation to study, which can lay the foundation for lifelong learning.

4

In conclusion, primary schools should not only focus on formal learning, but also incorporatenot focus solely on formal learning, but also incorporate play into the curriculum. I believe that incorporating play into lessons is an effective way to support children’s overall development.
