Sample Response
MuseumsMuseumMuseums and art galleriesexhibits have long been at the forefront of preserving and representing cultural values and histories, and have been usedbeing utilized by almost all countries for centuriesthroughout the centuries. However, whether they should mainly represent local cultures rather than international collections is open to dispute. I personally believe that traditional museums should focus on presenting the cultureoutlining the cultural aspects and artworks of the country while separate museums for international collections do not harmhaving separate museums with items from other countries does not hurt national identitythe national feeling.
Educating people about the history and traditions of a country is the primary reason we have museums in the first place. They conserve important cultural specimens, artefacts, artworks and other items that reflect the national pastto boast about our past and help researchers dig deeper into history. Such museums, which primarily represent national traditionswhich primarily signify our tradition, should contain itemsshould comprise things we, as a nation, can be proud of, rather than having internationally acclaimed artworks or sculptures. For instance, many national museums in Europe solely focus on preserving artefacts and artworks from the country and they are quite popular among international tourists.
Having said that, the concept of a museum, in the modern era, has changed to a great extent. We now have aviation museums, war memorials, motor museums, computer museums, archaeological museums and the list goes on. To make these types of museums popular and useful, we have to have international collections. For instance, the Motor Museum in Australia has a collection from more than 20 countries, and they serve their purpose just fine.
To conclude, national and traditional museums should focus on nurturing national history and heritage, but we also need museums with international collections to make them more functional and famous. One does not necessarily diminish the necessity and usefulness of the other.
Why this response received Band 8.0
The essay offers a clear, nuanced position: national museums should prioritise local heritage, while specialist institutions can benefit from international collections. Its strongest feature is the logical two-part structure supported by relevant examples; the main limitation is that the need for international collections is asserted more than explained, and a few collocations are awkward. Explain how cross-border collections improve specialist museums and replace imprecise phrases with natural academic wording.
IELTS Writing Criteria Scores
Task Response
A clear qualified position directly addresses the issue, and both local and international collections are discussed with relevant reasons and examples.
Explain the specific educational or comparative value that international exhibits add to specialist museums rather than simply stating that they are needed.
Coherence and Cohesion
The introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs, and conclusion form a logical progression, with cohesive devices generally managed naturally.
Strengthen the transition into the specialist-museum argument by explicitly linking it to the limits of an exclusively local collection.
Lexical Resource
The response uses a broad range of cultural and museum-related vocabulary, though phrases such as "does not hurt the national feeling" and "boast about our past" are imprecise.
Use natural academic alternatives such as "does not weaken national identity" and "showcase the nation's heritage."
Grammatical Range and Accuracy
A varied range of complex sentences is handled with strong control, and the isolated opening duplication and minor pronoun issue do not impede meaning.
Proofread for local slips, correcting "MuseumMuseums" and matching the singular Motor Museum with "it serves its purpose."
