The suggestion thatThis policy requires universities to accept equal numbers of men and women in every subject. It is well intended, seeking to promote fairness and gender inclusivity in higher education. However, equal access to education does not guarantee equal outcomes, and rigidly enforced gender representation across all disciplines fails to deliver genuine fairness. Therefore, I completely disagree with this proposal because it is illogical and potentially counterproductive.
To achieve an equal gender ratio in every university subject, two requirements must be met. First, the applicant pool must be sufficiently balanced before admission to ensure a gender-balanced cohort. Second, students’ subject choices need to be evenly distributed by gender. Unfortunately, real education systems cannot guarantee either requirement.
The proposal is unrealistic in practice because universities cannot control the gender composition of their applicant pool. In some regions, religious or traditional practices limit female schooling, leaving few female candidates for certain degrees. Even in societies with established gender equality in educationrecognised educational rights, this target is difficult to attain. Admissions prioritise academic merit over gender parity, and differences in entry criteria and subject demand naturally create gender imbalance. For instance, engineering attracts more male applicants, while nursing draws more women despite impartial assessment rules. These uneven applicant pools make a gender-balanced intake hard to achieve.
Even with a balanced intake, achieving proportionateintake, proportionate gender representation per subject remains difficult. Individuals’ subject preferences are shaped by personality, career aspirations, andpersonality, career goals and long-standing social influences, and these inherent differences sustain disparities across fieldsperpetuate gender imbalance. Policymakers propose compulsory quotas to address this gap. Admittedly, quotas challenge outdated assumptions, such as the idea that nursing is suited only to womennursing belongs to women and mechanical engineeringcommercial driving is male-dominated. Yet such measures bring only temporary benefits and undermine real equality of opportunity. They override personal preference and may force universities to admit lower-scoring applicants or push students into unwanted subjects. Instead, universities could run pre-university outreach campaigns to break these biases and encourage young people to explore fields dominated by one gender.
In conclusion, fair admission opportunities should be championeddeserve advocacy, but compulsory gender parity per subject is unrealistic. Balanced representation requires a mixed applicant pool and evenly spread subject preferences—conditionspreferences, conditions rarely met together. Targeted affirmative action can support disadvantaged learners in regions with deep educational inequity. True gender equity relies on inclusive support and merit-based selection, rather than rigid enrolment quotasfigures.
