The proposal requiringThis policy, which requires universities to accept equal numbers of men and women in every subject, is well intended, seeking to promote fairness and gender inclusivity in higher education. However, equal access to education does not guarantee equal outcomes, and rigidly enforced gender representation across all disciplines fails to deliver genuine fairness. Therefore, I completely disagree with this proposal because it is illogical and potentially counterproductive.
For this equal-quota policy to work, two preconditions would need to be satisfied. First, the applicant pool must be gender-balanced before admission to ensure a gender-balanced cohort. Second, students’ subject choices need to be evenly distributed by gender. Unfortunately, neither of these conditions can reliably be met within real education systems.
This policy is unworkable in practice, since universities cannot overcome the inherentnatural barriers that make its rigid gender quotastarget unrealistic. Where religious or cultural norms restrict female schooling, there is an acute shortage of female candidates for certain university degrees. Even in societies where educational rights are formally recognised, this target remains difficult to attain. Since admissions prioritise academic merit over gender parity, variations in entry criteria and subject demand naturally produce a gender imbalanceproduce gender imbalance. For instance, engineering attracts more men, while nursing draws more womenFor instance, engineering attracts more male applicants, while nursing draws more women, even when assessment rules are entirely impartial. These uneven applicant pools make a gender-balanced intake exceedingly difficult to achieve.
Even if these practical barriers were overcome, compulsory gender quotas would still be counterproductive, as they erode fairness by overriding individual choice. Admittedly, quotas do challenge outdated stereotypes, such as the assumption that nursing is predominantly femalebelongs to women and mechanical engineering predominantly maleis male-dominated. Even so, this policy confuses equality of outcome with equality of opportunity, as it may oblige universities to admit lower-scoring applicants or allocate students to subjects they have little desire to pursuehave no wish to study. A more constructive alternative would be pre-university outreach programmesInstead, universities could run pre-university outreach programmes to break these stereotypes and encourage young people to explore fields traditionally dominated by one gender.
In summary, this mandatory parity policy remains both unrealistic and counterproductive, even though its goal of fairer higher education is admirable. Where educational disadvantage runs deep, targeted affirmative action can support vulnerable learners. True gender equity rests on inclusive support and merit-based selectionrests on inclusive support and merit-based selection, rather than rigid enrolment figures.
