1

Universities should accept equal numbers of male and female students in every subject. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

2

This policy, which requires universities to accept equal numbers of men and women in every subject, is well intended, seeking to promote fairness and gender inclusivity in higher education. However, equal access to education does not guarantee equal outcomes, and rigidly enforced gender representation across all disciplines fails to deliver genuine fairness. Therefore, I completely disagree with this proposal because it is illogical and potentially counterproductive.

3

For this mandatory 50:50 quota systemequal-quota policy to work, two preconditions would need to be satisfied. First, the applicant pool must be gender-balanced before admission to achieve a gender-balanced cohort. Second, students’ subject choices would need to be evenly distributedneed to be evenly distributed by gender. Unfortunately, neither of these conditions can reliably be met within real education systems.

4

This policy is unworkable in practice, since universities cannot overcome the systemicnatural barriers that make its rigid gender target unrealistic. Where religious or cultural norms restrict female schooling, there is an acute shortage of female candidates for certain university degrees. Even in societies where educational rights are formally recognised, this target remains difficult to attain. Since admissions prioritise academic merit over gender parity, variations in entry criteria and subject demand naturally produce gender imbalancesimbalance. For instance, engineering attracts more male applicants, while nursing attracts a predominantly female cohortdraws more women, even when assessment rules are entirely impartial. These uneven applicant pools make a gender-balanced intake exceedingly difficult to achieve.

5

Even if these practical barriers were overcome, compulsory gender quotas would still be counterproductive, as they erode fairness by overriding individual choice. Admittedly, quotas do challenge outdated stereotypes, such as the assumption that nursing is suited to womenbelongs to women and mechanical engineering is suited to menmale-dominated. Nevertheless, such a policy confusesEven so, this policy confuses equality of outcome with equality of opportunity, as it may oblige universities to admit lower-scoring applicants or allocate students to subjects they have no wish to study. Instead, universities shouldcould run pre-university outreach programmes to break these stereotypes and encourage young people to explore fields traditionally dominated by one gender.

6

In summary, this enforced gender quotamandatory parity policy remains both unrealistic and counterproductive, even though its goal of fairer higher education is admirable. True gender equity rests on inclusive support and merit-based selection, rather than rigid enrolment figures.
