Do you think that modern technology, such as the internet and computers will ever replace the book or the written word as the main source of information?
Sample Response
The popularity of modern gadgets is increasing day by day all over the world. In my opinion, e-books and news websites will replace printed books and newspaper.
Firstly, many publishing companies began to sell e-books instead of printed ones. Moreover, especially young people prefer reading e-books instead of reading printed books. They think it is easier and more entertaining compared to reading printed books. Furthermore, many people believe that news on the website is more reliable and speedy updating than newspaper because news can change in a minute but newspaper could not update news every second.
Secondly, technology is improving amazingly. Therefore, modern gizmos are being updated almost every day. Many technophiles are keeping up with this improvement. Hence, companies are obliged to change their goods. For example, Radical was the most popular newspaper in Turkey, but the publishing company had to switch their marketing strategies. As a result, it decided not to publish the newspaper on paper based last year and embarked on publishing news on the website which is required to pay money in order to read the news.
The technological advancement in internet and communication technology is offering so much convenient that people are switching their habit to adopt the technology. There are very few young people who would buy a hard copy of a paper or magazine and take all the hassle of going to the store and then purchase it. They are taking advantages of technology and getting these things from their laptop, smartphones and other handheld devices. The popularity of e-book is increasing and more and more people are reading e-books than ever.
In conclusion, as it is known, people spend most of their time on the internet. For this reason, they would like to read books, newspapers even play cards on it. Thus, they demand e-books instead of printed ones. In my view, in the future, printed books will be rarely bought and only found in the libraries.
IELTS Writing Correction
- 1. Use plural noun Original: newspaper Suggested revision: newspapers Why it matters: The sentence talks about printed newspapers generally, so the plural form is needed.
- 2. Use natural collocation Original: speedy updating Suggested revision: updated more quickly Why it matters: This is not a natural adjective-noun phrase for online news.
- 3. Use formal wording Original: modern gizmos Suggested revision: modern digital devices Why it matters: The phrase is informal and weakens the academic tone.
- 4. Hyphenate adjective Original: paper based Suggested revision: paper-based Why it matters: A compound adjective before an implied noun needs a hyphen, though the whole phrase should be recast.
- 5. Use noun form Original: so much convenient Suggested revision: so much convenience Why it matters: After “offering,” the sentence needs a noun phrase rather than an adjective.
- 6. Fix noun agreement Original: switching their habit Suggested revision: changing their habits Why it matters: The plural possessive subject requires a natural plural object here.
- 7. Fix verb pattern Original: take all the hassle Suggested revision: go through all the hassle Why it matters: The current verb choice is understandable but not idiomatic.
- 8. Use singular phrase Original: They are taking advantages Suggested revision: They are taking advantage Why it matters: The fixed expression is “take advantage of,” not “take advantages of.”
- 9. Match plural nouns Original: laptop, smartphones Suggested revision: laptops, smartphones Why it matters: The list refers to devices in general, so the first noun should also be plural.
- 10. Use precise term Original: handheld devices Suggested revision: handheld digital devices Why it matters: This would connect the example more directly to the technology argument.
- 11. Use plural or article Original: e-book is increasing Suggested revision: e-books is increasing Why it matters: The phrase needs either a plural noun or an article; “the popularity of e-books” is clearer.
- 12. Avoid filler phrase Original: as it is known Suggested revision: as many people now spend Why it matters: This phrase is vague and does not add a clear logical link.

IELTS Writing Criteria Scores
Detailed feedback by IELTS writing criterion after the annotated essay.
Task Response
The essay gives a clear view that digital sources will largely replace printed books and newspapers, and it supports this with relevant reasons and examples. Development is sometimes repetitive, especially around e-books and newspapers, so the argument is solid but not consistently deep.
Develop fewer main ideas in more detail, and make each body paragraph add a clearly new reason rather than repeating the same digital-versus-print point.
Coherence and Cohesion
The response has a logical introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, with clear progression from publishing to technology and habits. Cohesive devices are frequent, but some are mechanical and paragraph three partly repeats earlier points.
Use topic sentences that show a new stage in the argument, then connect examples back to the main claim more explicitly.
Lexical Resource
Vocabulary is topic-relevant, with terms such as e-books, publishing companies, and handheld devices. Some word choices are awkward or inaccurate, which reduces precision.
Replace broad or unnatural phrases with exact collocations such as "digital devices", "updated quickly", and "printed newspapers".
Grammatical Range and Accuracy
There is a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and meaning is usually clear. Errors with articles, singular/plural nouns, and word forms occur regularly.
Proofread noun forms and adjective/noun combinations, especially when contrasting singular and plural items such as books, newspapers, and websites.
