Why this response received Band 5.5
The response's strongest feature is its clear preference for change and its attempt to discuss both approaches before explaining that choice. Its main limitation is that several ideas are exaggerated, loosely relevant, or insufficiently developed, and frequent language errors make the reasoning less precise. The highest-priority improvement is to use realistic, directly relevant examples and develop each comparison through clear explanations expressed in more accurate sentences.
IELTS Writing Criteria Scores
Task Response
Both approaches and the writer's preference are covered, but the comparison is uneven and some supporting ideas are implausible or only loosely relevant.
Explain realistic personal and social consequences of each approach and connect every example directly to the comparison.
Coherence and Cohesion
The response has a discernible sequence and basic signposting, although cohesion is mechanical and the absence of paragraph breaks weakens progression.
Organise the comparison, contrasting approach, and personal preference into separate paragraphs with clearer links between claims and examples.
Lexical Resource
The writer attempts a reasonably varied vocabulary, but frequent inaccurate word choices and collocations often make expression awkward.
Choose simpler, natural phrases for familiar habits, adaptation, and new experiences rather than forcing imprecise formal vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy
Some complex structures are attempted, but frequent errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction limit accuracy.
Build accurate simple and compound sentences first, then add controlled subordinate clauses with consistent subject-verb agreement and tense.
