Band 7.0 IELTS Writing Task 2 Correction

As most people spend a major part of their adult life at work, job satisfaction is an important element of individual wellbeing. What factors contribute to job satisfaction? How realistic is the expectation of job satisfaction for all workers?

Sample Response

Job satisfaction is believed to be an important aspect of one’s self-satisfaction and a happy life. To be satisfied with a job, many expectations need to be fulfilled and it is a matter of debate whether a job satisfaction exists or not. So how do we define job satisfaction and which elements are essential for an agreeable job? Firstly, an individual should choose a job that matches his skill set and where he could find mental satisfaction. A job that provides a sense of fulfilment, secure working environment and pays well is a desired job for many. Traditionally, a job that has a social status, better pay scale and gives freedom to an employee is said to be a dream job. Unfortunately, not all of us have such dream jobs. Some other important factors like adequate holidays, compensations, learning opportunity, career growth, a decent boss, nice colleagues, job security and fair working environment are often considered the most important aspects of a job. I believe a nice job should guarantee progress - both skills and remuneration. For example, training courses that help employee gain new skills would help improve his career and therefore benefit his workplace and his community as well. Since job satisfaction and expectation of employee change with time, it is almost unrealistic to define a job which is perfect and completely satisfactory for all. While some people are unsatisfied with their jobs because of poor payment, others complain about the future prospect. Even if these criteria are met in a job, some people would start complaining about other aspects. That is why it is quite unrealistic that each and every employee would be happy in their workplace. In conclusion, some common factors like salary, respect, learning opportunity, work environment and job security could be influential aspects for job satisfaction but it is quite impossible for all employees to be happy in their job environment.

IELTS Writing Correction

  • 1. Article error Original: whether a job satisfaction exists or not Suggested revision: whether job satisfaction exists or not Why it matters: Job satisfaction is used as an uncountable idea here, so the article is not needed.
  • 2. Formal framing Original: So how do we define job satisfaction Suggested revision: This raises the question of how job satisfaction should be defined Why it matters: A direct question sounds less academic in this essay context.
  • 3. Inclusive pronoun Original: where he could find mental satisfaction Suggested revision: where they can find personal satisfaction Why it matters: Use a neutral plural pronoun and present tense for a general statement.
  • 4. Missing article Original: secure working environment Suggested revision: a secure working environment Why it matters: A singular countable noun phrase needs an article.
  • 5. Natural collocation Original: pays well is a desired job Suggested revision: pays well is desirable Why it matters: The original repeats job and sounds unnatural.
  • 6. More natural phrase Original: has a social status Suggested revision: has high social status Why it matters: Social status normally needs a modifier such as high in this context.
  • 7. Word form Original: compensations Suggested revision: compensation Why it matters: Compensation is usually uncountable when referring to pay and benefits generally.
  • 8. Plural noun Original: learning opportunity Suggested revision: learning opportunities Why it matters: The list refers to job features generally, so the plural form is more natural.
  • 9. Missing article Original: help employee gain new skills Suggested revision: help an employee gain new skills Why it matters: Employee is a singular countable noun and needs an article.
  • 10. Neutral reference Original: benefit his workplace Suggested revision: benefit the workplace Why it matters: This avoids an unnecessary gendered pronoun.
  • 11. Plural agreement Original: expectation of employee change with time Suggested revision: employees' expectations change with time Why it matters: The subject needs a plural possessive noun and a plural verb.
  • 12. Plural collocation Original: the future prospect Suggested revision: future prospects Why it matters: Future prospects is the standard expression for career possibilities.
