Sample Response

Computers have many advantages. Firstly computers help in effective communication and it makes our communication easier. The internet and e-mail save our time. For example, with the introduction of the internet and e-mail, we do not have to wait days and months to get a reply. Secondly, it increases our interaction with our friends and colleagues. Moreover, we can keep in touch with our old friends even though staying in different poles of the world. For instance, I could talk with my childhood friend using ‘Skype’ yesterday. Furthermore, computers made our everyday life more convenient. We can do e-shopping by sitting at home. Additionally, computers refresh our knowledge. All the information is available on the finger tip. We get all updated news online. Previously we had to wait for the next day to get newspapers. Even e-books and magazines are available online which reduces workload and time. On the other hand, there are significant disadvantages of computers. Overuse of computer causes strain on eyes which leads to poor eyesight. Again one of the reasons for obesity and back pain is overuse of computer. In fact, computers reduce the family relationships. Parents cannot mingle with their children. Even they are not able to arrange leisure time with their family. Probably, modern inventions like internet and e-mail play a vital role in family disruption as family members interact less with each other. Computers have made the human beings lazy as everything is available in seconds. In this era, people’s reading habit is declined remarkably with all these new inventions which in turn cause a loss in world’s literature. In conclusion, though computers are beneficial to the human community, there are several demerits also. So in my opinion, computers have made our life more complex and stressful.

Overall assessment

Why this response received Band 6.5

The essay considers both convenience and stress in substantial detail and ultimately states a clear view that computers have made life more complex. Its main limitation is that the position emerges only at the end, while the discussion relies on many brief, sometimes overgeneralised claims and repetitive linking. Prioritise an early thesis and develop fewer, stronger reasons with precise cause-and-effect explanation.

The response progresses from advantages to disadvantages and conclusion, but absent paragraphing and a dense sequence of additive linkers make the organisation mechanical.
