Sample Response
The graph provides a breakdown of pH levels in the mouth from the moment of consumption to 40 minutes after the initial intake of sweet foods, namely fruit sugar, cane sugar and honey.
Overall, the pH dropped sharply before steadily returning to neutral over the forty-minute period. At pH levels from PH 3 to nearly PH 5.5 there is a high chance of tooth decay, but above pH 5.5, tooth decay becomes unlikely to occur.
Acid level was at its highest, at a PH 7 , the moment after the sweet food consumption. The PH level dropped sharply during the first 5 minutes after consumption. In addition, cane sugar showed the steepestshowed the sharpest decrease from pHPH 7 to approximately pH 3.5, which was followed by fruit sugarby the fruit sugar at nearly pHPH 4.2 and honey at roughly pH 4.9 . Between 5 and 10 minutes after consuming honey, eating the honey, the PH level remained stable. As for the cane and the fruit sugar, the level started to rise after 5 minutes, which was followed by the honey after 10 minutes.
Furthermore, 25 minutes after consuming honeythe honey intake, PH level rebounded to its starting level of pH 7. As for the fruit sugar, its level continued to rise steadily, before reaching pHPH 7 after 35 minutes. Lastly, cane sugar took a full 40 minutes to get to PH 7.
Why this response received Band 7.0
The report effectively highlights key data points and trends, providing a clear overview and logical paragraph structure throughout. Its primary limitation is a conceptual misinterpretation of the pH scale, misidentifying a neutral pH of 7 as the highest acid level rather than the lowest. To improve, ensure scientific indicators like pH are described accurately in relation to acidity levels.
IELTS Writing Criteria Scores
Task Achievement
Key trends, turning points, and threshold values are clearly identified, though there is a minor conceptual confusion regarding pH levels and acidity.
Double-check how visual scales are defined in the prompt to avoid conflating a low pH value with low acidity.
Coherence and Cohesion
Information is logically organized in chronological order with clear topic sentence divisions and appropriate transitions.
Vary cohesive expressions beyond repeating 'as for' to create smoother sentence-to-sentence connections.
Lexical Resource
A good variety of vocabulary related to trend description and numerical values is used accurately throughout the text.
Maintain consistent capitalization and formatting for scientific units such as writing 'pH' uniformly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy
A broad range of simple and complex sentence structures is produced with high accuracy and minimal grammatical errors.
Eliminate minor spacing and punctuation slips around prepositions and data figures to refine overall technical precision.
